Lansdale Catholic dominant in shutout win over Wissahickon

LOWER GWYNEDD >> After a tough loss to William Penn Charter last week, the Lansdale Catholic Crusaders dominated to a 47-0 road victory against the Wissahickon Trojans.

Even though Lansdale Catholic put up big numbers on offense, it was the Crusader defense that had the biggest performance giving up only 84 yards of offense and scoring three safeties.

“The mindset was that we needed to play four quarters together,” said LC head coach Dominic D’Adonna. “The defense certainly picked it up today compared to the first two weeks.”

“They tackled much better, reacted much better, and as a group they’ve upped their levels,” added D’Adonna about the Crusader defense.

In the first quarter, the defensive line managed to get Wissahickon quarterback Nick Santo deep in the end zone for the safety and a 16-0 lead.

The Crusader defense did the same thing again later in the second quarter to make the score 32-0.

When a bad snap went over the head of Santo in the third quarter, he managed to get the ball back but was tackled in the end zone for the third time.

Despite giving up 57 passing yards in the last drive of the game, the Lansdale Catholic defense managed to keep the shutout and walk away with a 47-0 victory.

The Lansdale Catholic defense only gave up two first downs to Wissahickon; both of those first downs happened on the last drive of the game.

On offense, Lansdale Catholic got a big performance from quarterback Jeron Phillips Jr. and running back Danny Dutkiewicz.

Phillips threw for 100 yards in the air and three touchdowns in the shutout victory.

“It’s a great bounce back win from last week,” said Phillips. “We just had to keep working hard and keep pushing and we just have to keep going up.”

Dutkiewicz ran for 115 yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns in the victory.

“The mindset for me was to just finish plays, finish tackles, and finish everything,” said Dutkiewicz. “If we keep doing that, we are going to win next week.”

Despite starting the season 0-3, the Wissahickon Trojans have hope after what happened on their last drive of the game.

With the junior varsity squad on the field, quarterback Aidan Defeo found Tommy Quinn twice in the air for 57 total yards.

Before the two receptions on the last drive, Wissahickon had -1 yards of passing.

Wissahickon head coach Bruce Fleming explained why he put the junior varsity players on the field at the end of the game.

“At the end of the game, we wanted our young guys out there because Lansdale Catholic was using their young guys,” said Fleming. “Our guys work hard and it’s important that we get them out there to improve.”

The Wissahickon football squad will start Suburban One League American Conference action next Friday when it hosts Plymouth Whitemarsh (3-0) with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Lansdale Catholic Crusaders will look to go 3-1 on the year when they travel to Harry S. Truman High School to take on Conwell-Egan Catholic on Saturday, Sept. 14 with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
