Shipley girls’ lacrosse team captures Friends’ Schools League championship
Bryn Mawr >> Despite Tuesday’s cold, rainy conditions, the mood was sunny for the Shipley girls’ lacrosse team, who captured the Friends’ Schools League championhip with a 15-13 win against Germantown Friends in the championship final.
With the victory, Shipley (11-2 overall) completed a perfect 9-0 record in the Friends’ Schools League.
Tuesday, Germantown Friends had a 17-9 advantage in draw controls, and held an 8-5 halftime lead, but the Gators battled back in the second half, helped greatly by the play of senior goalie and captain Grace Donnelly, who recorded 18 saves and a save percentage of 69 percent.
Shipley also was graced by the play of Grace Gordon, who netted a season-high six goals. Kate Scutt, Katie Bergen and Elizabeth Talluto each scored two goals, and Emma Baker and Maggie Kline scored the other Shipley goals. Scutt won six draw controls, Bergen won three.
“Our senior leadership, high-quality shots on goal and impeccably disciplined defensive team were key to our victory,” said Shipley girls’ lacrosse coach Iris-Louise Williamson. “Scrappiness, hard fought goals, and patient discipline ball-movement was the name of our attack this afternoon. We also got quality output from players off the bench, and heads-up goalkeeping to keep the ball on our stucks by Grace Donnelly, who carried the team. Grace Gordon was clutch today as well.”
The Gators’ season is not over – they will face Mercersburg Academy in the first round of the PAISAA state tournament Friday May 17 (after the Main Line Times & Suburban went to press).
