Owen Baim’s three goals lead Wissahickon past Abington

ABINGTON >> In the regular season finale for both teams, the Wissahickon boy’s lacrosse team got a huge lead in the first quarter to beat Abington 7-3 Thursday night.

Leading the way for the Trojans was Owen Baim, who scored three goals in the victory.

“I am so pumped after this big win,” said Baim. “This was our best showing in all four years I have been here, so I look forward to carrying this momentum heading into the playoffs.”

Baim scored one goal in each of the first three quarters.

“Making the playoffs was our goal since the end of last year,” said Baim. “I told the team that our goal looking forward was to get a home playoff game, so for that to hopefully come true is amazing.”

The Trojans (11-5, 7-1 SOL American) got off to a great start leading the Ghosts 3-0 after the first 12 minutes of the game.

Abington (9-8, 4-4) finally scored in the second quarter on a Marco Mcafee strike before Baim scored his second goal to put Wissahickon up 4-1 at halftime.

“Of course I was going for more goals,” said Baim. “I always try to help the team the best way that I can so we can get the win.”

The Trojans kept the momentum going in the third quarter, stretching the lead to 6-2.

Both teams scored one goal in the fourth to give Wissahickon the 7-3 victory in the last game of the regular season.

Wissahickon head coach Dan Layfield was thrilled for Baim’s performance in the last regular-season game.

“Owen is the leader on offense and defense,” said Layfield. “I give that kid a ton of credit when he’s on the field and he was focused today.”

“He gets the team focused and he makes the right decision and plays,” added Layfield about Baim. “He had a heck of a game and a heck of a season and he’s been our number one player all year.”

Mcafee lead the way for Abington by scoring all three goals in the loss.

Abington head coach Michael Duffy was thrilled for Mcafee’s performance despite the tough loss.

“I thought the team did great defensively against a tough Wissahickon team,” said Duffy. “Marco did what he had to do to keep us in the game and I told him we needed something from a senior, so he stepped up and got all three goals from us.”

Wissahickon and Abington wait to see who they face in the District 1-3A playoffs with the bracket being announced on Saturday.
