Shipley honors its top coaches during special Alumni Weekend

Bryn Mawr >> As part of The Shipley’s School’s Alumni Weekend May 4-5 celebrating its 125th anniversary year, the Gators honored past and present coaches who had earned more than 100 career wins at the school. The coaches honored included Bryan Bendowski, Mark Duncan, Sean Costello, Erika Baker Frank, Peter Stokes, Marta Johnson, Katie Whelan, Michelle Then, Thom Schauerman, Jeff Jewitt, Phil D’Ambrosio and Shannon Hazell.
Bendowski, who has coached baseball since 2004, had 210 wins as of May 4.

Duncan, who is also the athletic director at Shipley, had coached 206 boys’ lacrosse wins as of May 4.
Costello has 177 wins as girls’ basketball coach and earned 40 victories as girls’ soccer coach for a total of 217 wins.
Frank, who coached girls’ basketball (1995-1998) and girls’ lacrosse (1996-2010) has more than 200 career wins.
Stokes earned 188 career wins as the boys’ squash coach from 1992 to 2009.
Johnson, who has coached volleyball from 2004 to present, has 140 career wins.
Whelan, who coached field hockey from 2004-2013, has 118 career wins.
Then earned 114 wins as field hockey coach and 192 wins as softball coach for a total of 306 victories.
Schauerman, who has coached boys’ soccer from 2005 to present, has 192 career wins.
Jewitt, who coached boys’ soccer from 1992 to 2005, and baseball from 1999 to 2003, has more than 200 career wins.
D’Ambrosio, who has coached boys’ basketball from 2012 to the present, has more than 100 career wins.
Hazell, who has coached squash and tennis for more than a decade, has more than 100 wins.

Steve Piltch, long-time headmaster at The Shipley School, said, “I am especially appreciative of the work the coaches have done over the past 25-plus years. Although the wins, and championships, may reflect the success of the program to the outside world, it is the lessons the coaches have taught our kids, the support they have given our kids, and relationships they have developed with the kids that are most important. It has been a privilege to work with the coaches. I will be forever grateful to them.”
