Garnet Valley’s Picone pitches gem, blanks Penncrest
Dom Picone threw another gem as Garnet Valley blanked Penncrest, 4-0, to stay in first place in the Central League.
Picone has been dealing all season for the Jags and Monday afternoon was more of the usual. He pitched a three-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts and no walks allowed.
Reece Malek had an RBI triple and scored a run. Cole Palis went 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Andrew Lainoff added an RBI knock for the Jags.
Danny McLaughlin had a double for the Lions.
Elsewhere in the Central League:
Marple Newtown 6, Upper Darby 0 >> Shane Benedict hurled a three-hit shutout with five Ks and Alden Mathes went 2-for-4 with a pair of triples and two runs scored for the Tigers. Jack Mulgrew clubbed a home run and Erik Molinaro laced an RBI double. Andrew Cantwell walked once and scored twice, while Kevin Merrone collected two RBIs.
Pat McCloskey led the Royals with two hits.
Ridley 6, Harriton 2 >> Ethan Pecko tossed 4.2 scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts to earn the win. Pecko and Pat Farrell each singled and scored two runs for the Green Raiders, while Adam Beyers went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Cam Farro and Ryan Schreiber both chipped in with a single and one RBI.
Haverford 1, Springfield 0 >> Ryan McCarthy struck out five and allowed only two hits and one walk over 6.1 innings to get the win. Andrew Stuck recorded the final two outs to nail down the save for the Fords.
McCarthy doubled and Pat Linder knocked in the game’s lone run.
Eddie Ronayne pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and only three hits allowed in the loss for the Cougars. Joey Little had a triple.
Lower Merion 3, Radnor 0 >> The Raiders (4-7, 4-6) failed to solve LM starter Kyle Patlove, who hurled a 74-pitch shutout with eight strikeouts. He allowed three hits and no walks.
Tyler Moore had an RBI single for the Aces.
Owen Lewandowski gave the Raiders four strong innings on the bump, giving up on one hit.
In the Catholic League:
Cardinal O’Hara 4, Neumann-Goretti 1 >> When Joe Sperone needed a big hit to help himself on the mound, he delivered. Sperone’s two-run single in the fifth inning gave the Lions some cushion against the Saints. Sperone pitched four innings with four Ks to earn the win. Tom Kane picked up the save.
Jim White and Brendan McGroary each had a double and a single for the Lions (10-3, 8-1). Dan Hopkins and Sperone finished with two hits apiece.
In the Ches-Mont League:
Sun Valley 14, Great Valley 2 >> Evan Fooks paced the Vanguards with a three-hit afternoon. He had a double and three RBIs.
Kenny Jensen tossed five solid frames to earn the win and helped his cause going 2-for-4 with two ribbies. Vinny DeAngelo had a pair of hits, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Vinny Proietto went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.
In nonleague action:
Chichester 5, Delco Christian 0 >> Zach Taylor went the distance for the Eagles (10-1), allowing only two hits while fanning five. Damian Thompson tripled and scored a run, while Jason O’Brien ripped an RBI double and crossed the plate once.
Prep Charter 6, Penn Wood 4 >> Adam Johnson and Jacquez Maybin each had a double and a run scored for the host Patriots. Liam Garner struck out seven in 3.2 innings of relief.
