Main Line wrap-up: Friends’ Central baseball rolls to another big win

The Friends’ Central School baseball team (14-2, 8-0) defeated Germantown Friends, 9-2, Tuesday.

The Phoenix scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to come back from a 2-1 deficit. Ninth grader Sam Burman led off the fourth with a walk, then, with one out, sophomore Jack Donahoe singled, and senior Sam Pendrak followed with his second RBI single to tie the game. Senior Mark Masi plated the go-ahead run on a fielders choice.

Sophomore Justin Rubin followed with an RBI single and then senior catcher Ben Kollender smacked his fifth homer of the season to extend the lead. Rubin was the winning pitcher going five innings and yielding five hits and only one walk. Ninth grader John Fitzpatrick threw a scoreless sixth and sophomore Eric Lillard followed with a scoreless seventh to close out the victory.

Boys’ lacrosse
Conestoga defeated Garnet Valley, 9-7, Tuesday.

Will Schnorr had four goals for the Pioneers, Patrick Reilly scored twice, and Brendan Murphy and Joe Allen each chipped in with one goal and two assists. Goalie Mick Lee recorded nine saves.
The Pioneers defeated LaSalle, 10-7, April 17. Will Schnorr scored six goals; Brendan Murphy had a hat trick; PJ Hewitt won seven of 11 faceoffs and Mick Lee recorded 11 saves.

Harriton defeated Upper Darby, 18-6, Tuesday, led by Michael Stewart (four goals, three assists), Leo Wackerman (four goals), Cooper Gutsche (three goals), Evan Prince (won 13 of 18 faceoffs, seven ground balls), Brian Stewart (two caused turnovers, five ground balls), Max Copley (six ground balls) and Aeden McKenna (two caused turnovers, three ground balls).
The Rams defeated New Hope-Solebury, 15-2, April 17. Jack Northington and Leo Wackerman each had a hat trick, and teammates Lachlan Northington, Jackson Smith and Michael Stewart each scored two goals. Evan Prince won 13 of 15 faceoffs and Robbie DePetris recorded seven saves.

Radnor defeated Penncrest, 12-3, Tuesday. Jackson Birtwistle powered the Raiders with two goals and three assists. Jaden Goldenstein, John Austen and Damien Ramondo added two goals apiece and Patrick Cullen won 10 of 13 faceoffs.

Shipley (8-2, 2-0) defeated George School 24-7, Tuesday, led by Luke Grayum (three goals, three assists) and Auggie Gehret (five goals). The Gators, who led 19-2 at halftime, were led on defense by Spencer Dee, Hunter Gallo, TJ McCabe, Egan Butala, Cam Light, Jake McCarthy on face-offs, Dean Maner and Tyler Drake, and goalies Nate Yi, Kyle Mezrow and Tyler Drake.

The Gators lost to Springside Chestnut Hill, 7-6, April 18. For the Gators, Luke Grayum scored four goals, and Tyler Drake provided standout two-way play at midfield.

Girls’ lacrosse
Academy of Notre Dame defeated Springside Chestnut Hill, 17-9, Tuesday.

The Irish were led by Claire Gola (four goals, including her 100th career goal, and six draw controls), Mikayla Dever (three goals, two assists), Georgie Gorelick (six goals), Belle McHugh (six caused turnovers) and Quinn Sullivan (eight saves).

Agnes Irwin defeated Penn Charter, 14-12, Tuesday. The Owls were led by Natalie Pansini (three goals, three assists, 12 draw controls, four ground balls), Emily Wills (three goals, two caused turnovers) and Marissa White (three goals).

The Owls lost to Ridgewood, 14-10, April 18. Emily Wills, Julianne Carey, Natalie Pansini and Marissa White each scored twice for the Owls. Pansini, Wills and White combined to win 16 draw controls.
Archbishop Carroll defeated Bonner Prendie, 19-1, Tuesday. The Patriots led 15-0 at halftime, and got four goals from Amber Germer, and three goals each from Kiley Mottice and Kellie Ann Matey. Carroll goalies Julia Dellarata and Sophie Kevtan combined for six asves.

The Patriots defeated Bishop Hallahan, 18-0, April 17. Sixteen different Patriots scored one goal; and Annie Dvonch tallied two. Karli Dougherty won seven draw controls, and Kiley Mottice won four.

Baldwin School lost to Episcopal Academy, 13-5, Tuesday. Freshman Clara Page hat a hat trick for Baldwin, and teammate Sean Tuckman scored two goals.

Conestoga lost to Garnet Valley, 13-12, Tuesday. For the Pioneers, Rachel Clark scored five goals, and Cam Evitts tallied four goals and dished out two assists. Goalie Sam Centofante recorded 12 saves.

Episcopal Academy defeated Baldwin School, 13-5, Tuesday. EA was led by Olivia Dirks (three goals, two assists, 10 draw controls), Izzy Rohr (four draw controls, two caused turnovers), Caroline Burt (two goals, two assists) and Alex Capozzoli (three goals, one assist).
The Churchwomen defeated Penn Charter, 11-6, April 19. Caroline Burt (three goals, two assists) scored her 100th career point, and Olivia Dirks scored five goals and won 13 draw controls.

Friends’ Central defeated Westtown School, 13-5, Tuesday. Brynne Menen scored eight goals for the Phoenix and dished out one assist. Phebe Guenther, Lindsey Schweitzer, Hannah Grossman, Thea Volpp and Aliza Sall scored one goal each while Grossman added two assists.
Harriton defeated Upper Darby, 18-1, Tuesday. The Rams had 10 goal scorers, including the first career goals for senior defender Makayla Braver and freshman attacker Rachel Kolton. Katelin Williams tallied four goals, Allie Schwab dished out five assists, Grace Dwyer had two goals and five draw controls, and Lauren Binnion had a hat trick.

Haverford High lost to Strath Haven, 11-8, Tuesday. Willa Hetznecker scored two goals for the Fords, and goalie Lauren Johns recorded 14 saves.

Radnor defeated Penncrest, 20-7, Tuesday. Ellie Mueller and Cate Cox had four goals and an assist each and Tori DiCarlo racked up three goals for the Raiders. Cierra Hopson and Molly May had strong outings for Radnor with two goals and two assists apiece.

Villa Maria Academy defeated St. Basil, 19-0, Tuesday. The Hurricanes (11-0, 9-0) were led by Abby Walheim (six assists), Margie Carden (three goals), Sarah Delaney (four goals) and Paige Demutis (three assists).

Baseball
Devon Prep lost to Roman Catholic, 8-4, Tuesday. For the Tide, Aaron Nuble went 2-for-3.

Friends’ Central defeated Friends Select, 13-0, April 18. Three Phoenix pitchers, sophomore Justin Rubin, freshman Luke Buscaglia and freshman John Fitzpatrick combined on a no-hit shutout, striking out eight while walking only two. Freshman Sam Burman had a homer and three RBIs and sophomore Eric Lillard had a triple and three RBIs to pace the Phoenix offense.

Haverford School (14-4, 3-1) defeated LaSalle, 11-8, in eight innings April 20. Jesse Goldman came off the bench to deliver a pair of three-run home runs to finish off the Explorers, who had a 7-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. Haverford erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead ignited by three-run HRs by Goldman and Joe Bonini. LaSalle came back to tie the game in the top half of the seventh but Goldman’s second three-run HR walked it off for the Fords in the bottom of the eighth with two outs. Pat Toal pitched two strong innings of relief and Eric Hoyt came in to throw a scoreless eighth to earn the Win. Eric Genther tied the game with an RBI single in the sixth and doubled and scored the winning run in the eighth.
Lower Merion defeated Second Baptist (Houston, Texas), 5-3, April 17. Winning pitcher Casey Murphy struck out nine batters. Kyle Patlove went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Murphy, Ben Birch and Alec Deegan each had two hits.

Softball
Baldwin School defeated Agnes Irwin, 19-0, Tuesday in five innings. Baldwin pitchers Maura Smith and Tessa Pearlstein combined for a no-hitter and struck out 13 batters. Alaina Donnelly went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and Georgia Dahm hit a home run.
The Polar Bears lost to Penn Charter, 1-0, April 18. Polar Bear pitcher Maura Smith allowed only two hits in seven innings, while striking out 10 batters.
Conestoga (10-0, 7-0) defeated Coatesville, 5-4, Tuesday in nine innings. Arianna Lucci singled with two out in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 4-4; then in the bottom of the ninth Faith Walker (3-for-5) hit a two-out double to drive in Kate Clement from first base with the game-winning run.
Friends’ Central defeated Abington Friends, 20-15, April 18. Zoe Shoemaker went 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Eva Bartholomew went 4-for-4, walked twice and scored five runs. Sammy Darling went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and Rore Anderson went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
Villa Maria Academy defeated St. Basil, 5-1, Tuesday. For the Hurricanes, Riley Miller had three hits, Natalie Bacallao went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, and pitcher Alyssa Viscardo allowed only three hits in six innings, striking out nine batters.

Boys’ tennis
Episcopal Academy defeated Germantown Academy, 5-2, Tuesday. Justin Chen stepped in at first singles and won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. EA swept the doubles matches, with Alec Austin/Daniel Hu, Petey Duger/Niki Lavu, Robbie Copit/Adam Oliva and Dhilan Lavu/John Bishop.
The Churchmen defeated Westtown, 5-2, April 17, winning at first singles (Aantorik Ganguly) and sweeping the doubles matches (Alec Austin/Daniel Hu, Niki Lavu/Petey Dugery, Robbie Copit/Adam Oliva and Dhilan Lavu/Johathan Huang).
Haverford School defeated Penn Charter, 5-2, Tuesday. The Fords won at third singles (Cole Wolf) and swpet the doubles matches (Thomas Ward/Aly Ba, Adamya Aggarwal/Joaquin Arias, Jeff Bozzi/Christian Crowder and Lachie Alexander/Haroon Naz.
Lower Merion lost to Radnor, 5-2, Tuesday. The Aces were winners in straight sets both at second singles (Justin Minerva) and fourth doubles (Scott Stuart and Alex Zhong).
Radnor defeated Lower Merion, 5-2, Tuesday. The Raiders won at first singles (Max Safanov), third singles (Alex Weiss), first doubles (Colton Markowitz and Ryan Klein), second doubles (Luigi Giacomucci and Ethan Lee) and third doubles (Chris Rinehart and Max Xie).

Track & field
Episcopal Academy (girls) defeated Germantown Academy, 69-52, Tuesday. For EA, Kat Harrar won the triple jump (32-9) and Rae Keffer-Scharpf won the high jump (4-8).
Against Springside Chestnut Hill Academy April 17, EA’s Katie Brian won the long jump and pole vault; Kat Harrar won the triple jump; and Laila Williamson won the 200 meter run.
Lower Merion (boys) defeated Garnet Valley (86-64) and Upper Darby (106.5-42.5) Tuesday. Adontrell Williams and Devon Tate took home two gold medals each to lead the Aces. Williams captured both hurdles events and Tate won the discus and javelin.
Radnor (girls) had some fine performances at the Rustin Invitational April 17. Zoe Metzger placed second in the javelin and seventh in the discus. Mab Rongione vaulted 8’6” to place fourth in the pole vault. Freshman Lucy Minning finished eighth in the 100 meter run and 10th in the 200 meter race. Hunny Witthoeft clocked a personal best of 2:36.5 in the 800 meter run.

Boys’ volleyball
Haverford High lost to Avon Grove, 3-0, Tuesday. Quinby Dahl had 10 kills and 14 digs but it wasn’t enough as the Red Devils won 25-11, 25-19, 25-22. Victory Shyti recorded 17 digs and Ethan Frank had 29 assists and seven digs for the Fords.

Golf
Agnes Irwin lost to Episcopal Academy, 226-272, Tuesday. The Owls were led by Anne Curran (45) and Maura Boyle (49).
Episcopal Academy (girls) defeated Agnes Irwin, 226-272, Tuesday at Gulph Mills Golf Club, led by Lauren Jones (40), Kathleen Mark (44) and Amanda Jones (46).
Friends’ Central lost to Westtown School, 177-184, Tuesday at Bala Golf Club. The best score for the Phoenix (6-2) was shot by John Bradbeer (44).
The Phoenix defeated Abington Friends, 155-182, Monday at McCall Golf Club. John Bradbeer shot a one-under-par 31, senior Max Cohen shot 38, followed by teammates Alex Plante (42) and Nick Kalman (44).
Shipley defeated host George School, 188-213, Tuesday. Leading the way for Shipley was James Heckscher (46), Ethan Nagorsky (46) and Zach Madeksza (46).
The Gators defeated Abington Friends, 177-196, April 18 at Huntingdon Valley. The Gators were led by Ethan Nagorsky (41) and James Heckscher (43).
