Delco Girls Basketball Roundup: Carroll, O’Hara win District 12 championships
Archbishop Carroll didn’t settle after winning its first Catholic League championship in seven years earlier this week.
Behind junior guard Erin Sweeney’s 33-point performance, the Patriots captured the District 12 Class 5A title Friday with a 56-39 decision over Mastery Charter North.
The Patriots (20-5) held a seven-point lead after one quarter and took a 26-11 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Sweeney banked five 3-point shots en route to her game-high in points. Harlem Jennings chipped in with eight points and six assists for Carroll. Karli Dougherty (six rebounds) and Hope Syron added four points apiece.
The Patriots open the PIAA Class 5A tournament against District 3 seventh-place finisher Mechanicsburg next Saturday at a neutral site.
In the District 12 Class 6A final:
Cardinal O’Hara 76, Central 29 >> The Lions celebrated their 10th consecutive District 12 title as 12 players scored at least two points in the victory.
Amaris Baker poured in 11 points and Sydni Scott added 10 for the Lions, who jumped out to a 21-2 lead after the first period.
Four players — Kerry Patterson, Siobhan Boylan, Marie Kamper and Annie Welde — tossed in eight points apiece.
O’Hara will face the loser of Saturday’s District 1 ninth-place game between Plymouth Whitemarsh and Central Bucks West in the opening round of the Class 6A state tournament next Friday at a neutral site.
In the District 1 playbacks:
Springfield 46, W.C. Henderson 29 >> The top seed in the District 1 tournament rebounded nicely from their upset loss in the semifinal round to finished third in the district.
Leading the way for the Cougars was sophomore Rachel Conran, who hit five 3-pointers for a game-high 15 points.
Jordan D’Ambrosio, the career scorer leader in program history, added 12 points and three assists for the Cougars, who led 11-3 after the first quarter and never looked back. Alexa Abbonizio contributed seven points and seven rebounds in the winning effort.
As a team, Springfield made eight 3-pointers and shot 12 of 15 at the foul line.
“Good team basketball and a nice bounceback from Tuesday,” Springfield coach Ky McNichol said. “The kids responded well, played good defense, and moved the ball well.”
Springfield (24-4) will begin its quest for a state championship against District 12 third-place finisher — and Catholic League finalist — Archbishop Wood. The Vikings defeated the Cougars in the first round of last year’s tournament.
Radnor 47, Pope John Paul II 31 >> The Raiders claimed fifth place in the tournament and recorded their 20th win of the season.
Fresh off eclipsing the 1,000-point plateau, junior forward Ellie Mueller scored 13 of her game-high 15 points in the first three quarters and grabbed nine rebounds. Brienne Williams sank a trio of 3-point shots and finished with 11 points for the Raiders (20-6), who raced out to a 26-6 lead at the half. Holly Holtsberg contributed eight points and Julia Rigolizzo pitched in with seven.
Radnor is headed to the state tournament for the fourth time in six years under longtime coach Mark Jordan. The journey to Hershey begins with a first-round matchup against either Southern Lehigh or Bagnor, who meet Saturday for the District 11 championship.
