GA’s Atkinson named Swimmer of the Meet at Easterns
Germantown Academy’s Emma Atkinson was named the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships Female Athlete of the Meet after the junior set new Franklin & Marshall pool, meet and school records in winning the 100 back in a time of 52.80 as the Patriots girls finished third in the team standings.
Emily Thompson took sixth in 500 free (5:04.77) for GA, who finished with a total of 420 points. Penn Charter was first at 541 with Episcopal Academy second at 521.
On the first day of Easterns, Atkinson — who has committed to Virginia Tech — broke pool, meet and GA records in winning the 200 free in 1:46.59. Earlier, Atkinson swam on the Patriots’ 200 medley relay with Elise Smigiel, Alana Andress and Erin Merke that earned All-American honors with a first-place time of 1:43.89.
Also on Day 1, Andress placed sixth in the 200 free (1:53.42) and seventh in the 100 fly (58.02), Merke was seventh in the 50 free (24.07) while the Patriots’ 200 free relay of Nicole Ranile, Emily Morrissey, Averi Webb and Merke placed fifth in 1:37.56.
Boys Swimming
GA takes 7th at Easterns >> Germantown Academy’s Zach Kohm and Henry Morrissey took fourth and seventh, respectively, in the 500 free — Kohm finishing in 4:28.08, Morrissey hitting the wall in 4:39.20 — as the Patriots boys swim team took seventh place at the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships.
GA ended the meet with 358 points. Phillips Academy Andover (Mass.) took first with 610 points.
For the Patriots, Jack Lafond placed seventh in the 100 breast (58.52) while Sean Keenan just missed the GA record in taking eight in the 100 back (50.49).
On Day 1 of Easterns, Kohm came in fifth in the 200 free with a time of 1:38.76 while Ga’s 200 free relay of Keenan, Lafond, Jack Maketa and Kohm took eighth in 1:34.56.
