D’Ambrosio tops among Springfield scorers, helps Cougars advance
Jordan D’Ambrosio became the leading scorer in Springfield girls basketball history Tuesday.
D’Ambrosio, a senior forward, scored 13 of her career 1,195 points to help the top-seeded Cougars to a 49-24 victory over No. 16 Wissahickon in the opening round of the District 1 Class 5A tournament.
D’Ambrosio made two free throws in the fourth quarter to break Erin Stiteler’s longstanding record of 1,194 points.
Belle Mastropietro added six points, five assists and three steals. D’Ambrosio and Mastropietro are both four-year starters who eclipsed the 1,000-point mark this season.
“Belle did a good job helping Jordan,” Springfield coach Ky McNichol said.
Sophomore guard Alexa Abbonizio had four 3-pointers for a game-high 14 points. Springfield outscored Wissahickon 14-2 in the second quarter to take a 30-10 lead into halftime.
Springfield hosts ninth-seeded West Chester East in the quarterfinal round Friday. East defeated No. 8 Strath Haven, 39-37.
