Sweeney’s career game leads Carroll to regular season crown
Erin Sweeney saved her best game of the season for the right time.
Archbishop Carroll’s junior guard scored a career-high 37 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and made four steals in a 65-46 victory over West Catholic. The Patriots clinched the regular season Catholic League title and will be the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, which begin next week.
Carroll (16-5, 11-1) exploded for 38 points in the second half while limiting the Burrs to five points in the fourth quarter. Sweeney drilled four 3-pointers and Harlem Jennings contributed 13 points. Freshman Grace O’Neill added nine points for the Patriots.
In other Catholic League action:
Bonner & Prendergast 64, Hallahan 34 >> Maeve McCann put forth another solid all-around game with 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals to lead the Pandas. Dakota McCaughan drilled three 3-pointers and had 11 points, Ariana McGeary scored nine and Bridie McCann netted eight.
Cardinal O’Hara 64, Conwell-Egan 18 >> Sydni Scott’s 17-point effort highlighted a blowout victory for the Lions, who raced out to a 31-6 lead in the first half. Stephanie Huseby added 10 points and Annie Welde had eight.
In the Del Val League:
Interboro 49, Chichester 19 >> Amanda Floyd returned from a season-long injury to help the Bucs defeat the Eagles. Floyd had six points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Hailey Wittorf tossed in a game-high 12 points, and Madison Diehl followed close behind with 11.
In the Ches-Mont League:
Sun Valley 57, Octorara 25 >> Balanced scoring keyed the Vanguards to their second win of the season on senior night. Senior guard Abby Seasock scored 17 points, and Maya Morris finished with 11. Savannah Lewis tossed in nine points, while Erin Michael and Michayla Heygood-Smith chipped in eight apiece.
In the Inter-Ac League:
Notre Dame 44, Episcopal Academy 20 >> Maggie Pina converted 7 of 8 free-throw shots and scored a game-high 19 points for the Irish, who held a 23-9 advantage at halftime. Maeve McErlane netted 11 points in the victory.
Riley Cassidy had seven points and Allie Sillo added six for the Churchwomen.
Germantown Academy 70, Agnes Irwin 24 >> Ellie Stauffer posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Jaye Haynes led all scorers with 21 points as GA pummeled the Owls. Maddie Vizza pitched in with eight points and five assists.
In the Bicentennial League:
Christian Academy 45, Phil-Mont Christian 26 >> Grace Gormley showed the way for the Crusaders with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Britney Dike also notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Deasia Speaks added 10 points for TCA (16-4, 7-4).
In the Catholic Academies League:
Villa Maria 39, Sacred Heart 24 >> The Lions were all even with Villa Maria after one quarter, but were outscored 29-14 the rest of the way. Paige Lauder tallied a game-high 23 points for the winners.
Kyra Quigley led Sacred Heart with 11 points.
