Abruzzo sets records, Episcopal takes Inter-Ac title

Mia Abruzzo may have left Episcopal Academy in an orderly fashion after Tuesday’s Inter-Ac Championships, but her name will linger on the record boards for a while.

Abruzzo won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, the Notre Dame sophomore and reigning Daily Times Girls Swimmer of the Year setting Burke Natatorium records in both, but the hosts got the final say as team champs.

Abruzzo clocked in at 2 minutes, 2.96 seconds in the 200 IM, overturning a six-year-old record set by Germantown Academy’s Rachel Zilinskas. Second was teammate Madison Kolessar in 2:08.00.

Abruzzo’s time of 55.57 in the 100 fly downed a four-year-old mark belonging to EA’s Emma Seiberlich. Abruzzo also shaved eight-hundredths of a second off her school mark.

Episcopal won the team crown with 317 points, edging Germantown Academy (269) and Penn Charter (237). Freshman Kelly Feuzeu Mekoue won the 50 free in 24.55 seconds, with teammate Chelsey Liu third and Isabel Handal sixth. Mekoue’s 53.40 bested the field in the 100 free, with Emma Lunn second and Handal fifth. Liu, Handal, Lunn and Mekoue teamed to win the 200 free relay.

EA’s Hadley DeBruyn finished second in the 200 free and 100 backstroke. Liu was second in the 100 fly behind Abruzzo, and Lunn took third in the 100 back.

Madison Kolessar followed her runner-up performance in the 200 IM by winning the 500 free in 4:59.36 for Notre Dame. Ashley Kolessar was second in the 100 breaststroke and fourth in the IM. The Kolessars, Abruzzo and Kayleigh Olszewski combined to finished second in the 400 free relay, setting a school record of 3:36.11. The Irish finished fourth as a team with 171 points.

Agnes Irwin was fifth in the team standings with 137 points. Senior Maddie Aguirre finished third in the 200 IM and second in the 500 free, in which teammate Emma Boratto finished fifth.

Brookhaven resident Emma Atkinson won a pair of events for Germantown Academy. She claimed the 200 free in 1:51.46, a margin of more than four seconds over DeBruyn. She bested her school record from two years ago in the 100 back by clocking in at 54.76 to win.
