North Penn takes 2nd in SOL Continental Tournament
WARRINGTON >> With the North Penn wrestling team getting a glimpse of the individual postseason, the Knights crowned three champions at the Suburban One Continental Championships Saturday at Central Bucks South High School.
In the effort, the Knights finished second in the team standings with 158 points and only behind Quakertown’s 194 points.
Quakertown crowned four champions with six wrestlers finishing second place to earn the team championship.
Patrick O’Neill, Amir Pickens, and Jarret Niedosik each claimed an individual championship for the Knights.
O’Neill, who was the number one seed at 160 pounds, went 2-0 with two major decisions to claim the title.
Niedosik, who is currently 25-7 on the season, earned two falls in a total time of eight minutes to earn the 170-pound title.
Pickens also scored two falls in the 285-pound bracket to win the SOL Continental championship.
O’Neill, who is a returning state place winner, was thrilled with his performance in his final league championship tournament.
“I think I wrestled well today,” said O’Neill. “I really focused on setting the pace and scoring as many points as I possibly could and cleaning everything up.”
North Penn head coach Rob Shettsline was pleased with how his team performed in the championship tournament.
“Today was good with the kids learning a lot,” said Shettsline. “They are stepping it up and they should be ready for the postseason coming up.”
Highlighting the tournament was Pennridge’s Evan Widing, who earned a fall and a decision to win the 152-pound championship.
Widing, who had a bye in the quarterfinals, got the day started with a fall in 2:23 against Quakertown’s Jake Wheeler.
Widing survived a thrilling contest against Central Buck South’s Corey Showaker with a 3-1 decision victory, but it wasn’t just a huge match because it was for the league championship.
The 3-1 decision victory was Widing’s 100th career victory making a mark on Pennridge’s history book.
“It feels really good to be a part of history,” said Widing. “Especially looking up at the banners during gym class, seeing some of the guys I look up to and knowing that I’ll be up there hoping to inspire some younger wrestlers.”
Pennridge head coach JT Lewis was thrilled with Widing getting the huge accomplishment.
“It just goes to show you the type of athlete that Evan is and the type of dedication he has,” said Lewis. “It’s just another award that he earned for all the hard work he has put in.”
“We are very proud of Evan getting his 100th win,” added Lewis. “We hope that the little guys looks up to these guys getting 100 wins and win medals and they see what it takes to get to that level.”
North Penn will return to action on Wednesday when the Knighs host Central Bucks South for North Penn’s senior night.
Pennridge will hit the road on Wednesday to take on Central Bucks East at 7:00 p.m.
