Souderton rolls past Pennridge
EAST ROCKHILL >> The Souderton wrestling team built playoff momentum at Pennridge by cruising to a 54-19 victory over the hometown Rams.
The Indians used the help of three forfeits and five falls to earn their eighth win of the season.
The win also pushes Souderton’s winning streak to five matches dating back to the Big Red Dual Tournament Jan. 12.
Highlighting the match for the Indians was Troy Mokluk, who got a quick fall in 38 seconds against Pennridge’s Brendan Lowery.
“I always get the jitters before my matches,” said Mokluk. “But just went out there aggressive and I tried to get the pin faster.”
The biggest match of the night was at 195 pounds between Pennridge’s Logan Green and Souderton’s Bruno Stolfi.
Green was ranked fifth in the pa-wrestling.com District One rankings while Stolfi was ranked third.
After a scoreless first period, Green took a 3-1 lead after scoring an escape point and a takedown before Stolfi got a last-second escape.
Unfortunately during the second period, Stolfi needed a timeout after suffering an apparent elbow injury but decided to keep going in the match.
Later in the third period, Stolfi needed a second injury timeout and it turned out Stolfi was unable to continue, giving Green the injury default victory.
Green, a good friend of Stolfi’s, was sad with the way the match ended.
“I feel good about the way I wrestled,” said Green. “It was a little awkward wrestling with someone we grew up with, but we’re not friends when we’re wrestling against each other.”
Souderton head coach Tristan Boyd was thrilled with his team’s victory heading into the District 1-3A duals tournament. The Indians are the 12th seed and face No. 5 Boyertown in the first round 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Hatboro-Horsham.
“I thought we wrestled well,” said Boyd. “We worked hard for good position and every just did their job.”
“Hopefully the injury is nothing serious for Bruno,” added Boyd about Stolfi’s match. “We’re hoping we can use some good ice and ibuprofen so we can get him back on the mat as soon as possible.”
Pennridge head coach JT Lewis was pleased with how his guys wrestled against a tough Souderton squad.
“We are hoping that Stolfi is alright,” said Lewis. “We are always going out there ready to wrestle and trying to win, nobody is trying to hurt anybody, so we hope he comes back quick and ready for us in the postseason.”
“Logan wrestled very well,” added Lewis. “He stayed very controlled in the match and we’re excited about the team’s progress heading into the postseason.
With the win, the Souderton improves to 8-6 (4-1 Suburban One League Continental). With the loss, the Pennridge drops to 2-8 (1-3).
