Alderfer’s two goals send Souderton past Easton, into PIAA-4A quarterfinals
PENNSBURG >> Hannah Alderfer described the goal, the one that few could see.
“Campbell (Power) played a very nice ball into me. She was in the middle of the field and she played a through ball between defenders,” said Alderfer, “and I ran up to it and hit it.”
Alderfer and Souderton Area came out of the fog with a 1-0 lead, and it was a lead the defense would staunchly protect into the second half. Alderfer’s second goal provided some breathing room for Big Red on this misty night on the turf, and the Indians would go on to earn a 2-0 victory over Easton in the opening round of the PIAA-4A Tournament at Upper Perkiomen High School Tuesday night.
“I think it’s our intensity,” Alderfer said of the offense gaining more and more momentum in this postseason run. “At the beginning of games, we’re really riled up to play and we’re more excited about playing. We really wanna get a goal in.”
The win sends Souderton to the state quarterfinals Saturday, to take on the winner of the Seneca Valley-Central Dauphin matchup.
“I did not think we would be here,” said a smiling Darby Kramer, one of the cornerstones of that Souderton defense, “but it’s very exciting.
“I think the secret was sticking together, not getting frustrated, even when we were struggling.”
Everything is clicking for Big Red right now. The Indians shut down Easton and got the two goals from Alderfer to go strutting into the quarters.
“I love the way we’re playing right now,” said coach Lindsy Jones, who hosted a team breakfast at her house Tuesday morning. “We’re organized and we pass the ball well. That is one of our strengths. I don’t know many teams that pass the ball as well as us.”
Never was this more evident than on the first goal by Alderfer, who capitalized on a great setup by Power.
A cross by Taylor Yoder found Alderfer for the clincher.
“We talk a lot about timing with our outside mids,” Jones said. “And (Alderfer) came through today. The first goal came as a result of 100 percent effort. She just went to the ball and didn’t give up.
“The second one was what we’ve been asking them to do. When we get a cross in, get a body part on that ball, get in there. And (Alderfer) got a nice, beautiful touch over the goalie. I couldn’t ask for more. The finish was very nice.”
