Episcopal girls win Easterns water polo title
Philadelphia >> The Episcopal Academy girls’ team won the Eastern Prep Water Polo Championship Nov. 4, defeating The Lawrenceville School, 11-8, and The Hill School, 14-8, at Penn Charter School to win the championship.
Sophomore goalie Katie Brian notched an impressive 24 saves during the two games. Other standouts in the victory against Lawrenceville were Margot LeRoux (two goals, four assists, one shot block, three steals), Jovana Sekulic (six goals, two assists, six steals, two kickouts drawn) and Astrid Faustmann (two goals, two shot blocks, six steals). Against Hill, Sekulic had eight goals and four kickouts drawn, while Faustmann had four goals, five assists and three steals.
Episcopal Academy head coach Maddi Moore (a 2010 EA grad) said, “I’m beyond proud of the hard work these girls put into the season. They improved each game and were able to consistently play as a cohesive team. Co-captains Mollie Bonner and Allison Lee did a great job motivating the team all season long and getting the girls excited to chase an Eastern Prep Championship victory.
“As a coach, this win was special on a personal note – as it came 10 years after my teammates and I won Easterns as a junior at EA.”

Haverford School
The Fords (23-4, 7-0) finished in second place, the highest finish in school history at Easterns. In the 12-11 loss to Hill School in the finals, Haverford standouts included goalie Nick Biddle (five saves, one assist, two steals), Bram Schork (one goal, two steals), David Gobora (four goals, one assist, six steals, two drawn ejections), Ryan LaRocca (three goals, five assists, one drawn ejection), Jake LaRocca (one assist, two steals), Matej Sekulic (two goals, one assist, one steal, one drawn ejection, one block), JR Leitz (one goal, one assist, one steal, one block) and Jack Deppen (two steals).
In Haverford’s tournament opener Nov. 3 at Baldwin School, the Fords defeated St. Benedict’s Prep, 19-5. Goalies Nick Biddle and Grayson Walker combined for 10 saves, while other Haverford standouts included Bram Schork (three goals, three steals), David Gobora (two goals, two assists, one steal), Jake Brewington (one goal, two assists, one steal), Ryan LaRocca (two goals, three assists), Jake LaRocca (one goal, three assists, three steals), Matej Sekulic (two goals, two assists, two steals), Caleb Cannon (three goals) and Jack Deppen (two goals, two steals).
Malvern Prep
The Friars opened the 2108 Eastern Prep Boys Water Polo Tournament Nov. 3 at Baldwin School with a last minute 9-8 loss to St. Benedict’s Prep (N.J.) Goalie Jake Caulfield was the bright spot for Malvern, making 17 saves.
Malvern Prep rebounded with an 18-4 win over Penn Charter. Jack Cassidy sparked the Friars with seven goals and three drawn ejections while Brennan Robinson had three goals, four steals, three blocks and four assists. Owen Preston, Ryan Cochran and Chris Krein each had two goals. Eric Yablonki, Dan Ward and Sean Hughes each scored.
The Friars then lost to Mount Saint Joseph’s (Md.), 11-7, Nov. 4.
