Carroll avenges championship loss to Bonner & Prendergast

Archbishop Carroll was in bounce back and payback mode Wednesday.

The Patriots rebounded from their first loss of the season and avenged an overtime loss to Monsignor Bonner & Archbishop Prendergast in last year’s Catholic League field hockey championship at the same time, with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over the Pandas.

Megan Curray and Katie LaBella scored in the first half, off assists from Keri Daly and Carleigh Connors, to stake Carroll (6-1 overall, 3-0 PCL) to a 2-0 lead. The defense, led by Carly Bateman and goalie Mary Kate Kearney made that advance stand up.

Kearney stopped five shots to post her third shutout in league play.

In nonleague action:

Episcopal Academy 1, Bishop Eustace 1 >> The Churchwomen and Crusaders traded goals in the first half then endured a defensive struggle that lasted through overtime.

Macy Szukics scored for EA (1-0-2), which got five saves from Caroline Kelly. The Churchwomen had their chances to find a winner but couldn’t quite capitalize.

Notre Dame 2, The Hill School 2 >> In the end, the Irish preserved their unbeaten start to the season (6-0-1) with an overtime draw, although they might be ruing a missed opportunity.

After taking a 2-0 lead into halftime on goals by Lauren Curran and Sophia Amos, Notre Dame saw the Blues claw back through Logan Clouser. She scored twice. The Irish outshot The Hill School, 19-5, in the game.
