Episcopal Academy’s Anna Salvucci is Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week
The senior soccer midfielder and captain had a stellar performance in EA’s opening game of the season, a 4-1 win against Radnor, scoring two goals and dishing out one assist. Last fall, she was a productive scorer (seven goals, 12 assists) for the Inter-Ac champions, with many of her scores coming in crucial league victories. She was a first team All-Inter-Ac, All-Main Line and All-Delco selection for girls’ soccer last fall. She has committed to the University of South Carolina for soccer.
Q: What particularly attracted you to the University of South Carolina? What do you think you might like to major in?
A: I knew since I was young that I wanted to play for a big soccer program, so when South Carolina reached out to me I knew it was going to be a top choice of schools for me. When I met the coaches I felt right at home and watching the women’s soccer team play, I knew it was the type of environment I wanted to be a part of. I’m currently thinking of majoring in international business, or physical therapy.
Q: Have you always played midfielder? What particularly attracts you to the midfield position?
A: I have not always played midfielder, I am seen as a defensive minded player. I usually play outside back and wing for my club team. When I started playing high school soccer I was moved to midfield. I enjoy playing midfield for high school because it allows me to get more touches on the ball, and to see the game from a different perspective.
Q: What (in your opinion) has been the highlight of your EA soccer career to date – can you share your most vivid memory of it with us?
A: My most vivid memory of my Episcopal Academy soccer career was during my sophomore year on EA/Agnes Irwin Day. My team and I did a corner trick play that led to me scoring a goal.
Q: Who have been your biggest soccer mentors, and what was the most important thing each of them taught you?
A: One of my biggest soccer mentors is Craig Scangarella. He’s taught me almost everything I know about the game ranging from technical skill to mental toughness. Another mentor of mine is [EA head coach] Andy Fraggos. He has taught me what it means to be a leader and a role model on and off the soccer field.
