Plenty of Delco teams still kicking in District 1 playoffs
A handful of Delco softball teams are alive and well in the District 1 Class 5A tournament.
No. 1 Penncrest (16-4) avenged a late-season loss to 16th-seeded Strath Haven with an 8-1 victory in the opening round. Maya Hartman held the Panthers to a run on three hits with eight strikeouts, while Emma Stauffer (four RBIs) and Kaitlyn Martin (3-for-4) each doubled.
The Lions meet No. 8 Great Valley in Friday’s quarterfinal round. The Patriots (12-9) got by ninth-seeded Phoenixville, 4-2, in the opener.
Elsewhere, No. 4 Interboro, the Del Val League champions, eliminated 12th-seeded Marple Newtown with a 5-2 win. Bridget Bailey struck out 13 in going the distance and Sam Bellano led the way offensively for the Bucs (15-6) with two hits.
Interboro will host 12th-seeded Springfield (9-9) in the quarterfinals Friday. The Cougars upset No. 5 Mount St. Joseph, 5-2, as Ashley Scarpato knocked in two runs and Jenna Casasanto pitched a complete game.
Finally, seventh-seeded Sun Valley (13-8) advanced with a thrilling 3-2 victory over No. 10 Upper Moreland. Kylie Kane drove in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Vanguards visit No. 2 Bishop Shanahan (15-6), which blanked 15th-seeded Radnor, 7-0. Devon Miller racked up 14 strikeouts for Shanahan in her team’s first-round win.
In the District 1/12 Sub-Regional, The Christian Academy’s quarterfinal round game was postponed Thursday due to rain. The third-seeded Crusaders (9-9) will take on No. 2 Friends’ Select (11-5) Friday.
