Reading’s Walker, Archbishop Wood’s Gillespie lead All-State boys basketball teams

Southeast Pa. was the same dominant force it was this winter when the 2016-17 Pennsylvania Sports Writers All-State boys basketball teams were released Friday.

Players of the Year were Reading senior Lonnie Walker (6A), Archbishop Wood senior Collin Gillespie (5A), Imhotep Charter senior Daron Russell (4A), Neumann-Goretti senior Quade Green (3A), Constitution senior Tamir Green (2A) and St. John Neumann senior Kevin Anderson (1A).

Walker, a McDonald’s All-American who guided the Red Knights to their first PIAA championship in front of a sellout crowd at Giant Center in Hershey, was joined on the first team by Archbishop Ryan’s Izaiah Brockington. Perkiomen Valley’s Justin Jaworski and Abington’s Eric Dixon made the 6A second team. Pennsbury’s Mark Flagg, Archbishop Ryan’s Matiss Kulackovskis and Father Judge’s Marc Rodriguez were on the third team.

Gillespie led the Vikings to a second straight PIAA championship in dominant fashion under 5A Coach of the Year John Mosco. Wood teammate Tyree Pickron, Penncrest’s Tyler Norwood and Strath Haven’s John Harrar made the 5A second team; Wood’s Matt Cerruti, Upper Merion’s Matt Faw and Chester’s Jamar Sudan were on the third team.

In 4A, Imhotep’s Russell was joined on the first team by teammate David Beatty and the Germantown Academy duo of Evan-Eric Longino and Kyle McCloskey, who led GA to a runner-up finish in the Pa. Independent Schools Athletic Association tournament. The 4A second team featured Episcopal Academy’s Conner Delaney, EA’s Nick Alikakos and Imhotep’s Donta Scott. Conwell-Egan Catholic junior Patrick Robinson, a 6-2 point guard who averaged 17.9 points-per-game for the Eagles, earned Class 4A third team honors.

Westtown, the champions of the PAISAA tournament, placed three players on the 3A first team: McDonald’s All-American Mohamed Bamba,

Brandon Randolph and Cameron Reddish. Player of the Year Quade Green was joined by N-G teammate Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree. The 3A second team features Delaware Valley Charter’s Antwuan Butler and Mahki Morris; third team features Germantown Friends’ Michael Buckmire and Shipley’s Sam Sessoms.

In 2A, Tamir Green was joined by Constitution teammate Maurice Waters and Math, Civics & Sciences’ Malik Archer on the first team. MC&S’ Tymair Johnson was on the third team.

In 1A, Girard College’s Mikeal Jones was the lone southeast Pa. player on the first team. Girard’s Daiquan Copeland was on the second team; Faith Christian’s Zeke Snowden was named to the third team.

The 2016-17 Pennsylvania Sports Writers All-State boys basketball teams, including each player’s school, height, class and scoring average.
