Agnes Irwin crew team kicks off its racing season
The Agnes Irwin School crew team kicked off its racing season March 26, entering four boats in the 2nd Manny Flick/Horvat Series on the Schuylkill River.
Two AIS boats took first place in their heats. The JV 4x (Emma Bonner, Anna Cayley, Rose Lawrence, Lexi Short) crossed the finish line three seconds ahead of second-place Baldwin, while the Lightweight 4x (Perry Maner, Sydney McCarthy, Caroline Richardson, Cameron Zuccarini) finished three seconds ahead of Academy of Notre Dame.
The AIS Novice 4x (Peyton Bond, Jazmyn Knight, Liza Pendergast, Nya Weems), competing in their very first race, were placed in a JV heat, and these young rowers were up to the challenge: they finished in second place, behind Conestoga and just 0.14 second ahead of third-place Penn Charter. The AIS Lightweight 2x (Maya Brown-Hunt, Julianna Jaskot) raced to a third-place finish.
“This year’s team is young, with only three returning seniors,” said AIS head coach Josselyn Delussey. “Today’s results will certainly energize the girls as we kick off our spring break training, and we’re excited to see how much faster we can move our boats after a full week of focus on technique and conditioning.”
Delussey, along with assistant coaches Janet Bartholdson Fry and Mary O’Neill, oversee a team of 22 student-athletes, including eight novice rowers. The AIS crew team is based out of Philadelphia Girls’ Rowing Club, the first and oldest structure on historic Boathouse Row.
