DWest’s Lilley wins OW as Ches-Mont dominates District 1 Central
QUAKERTOWN — As has been the norm at the District 1-AAA Central tournament, rematches from the Ches-Mont Championships are aplenty.
With little resistance from the Suburban One League American Division, there were eight repeats from the finals a week ago. Downingtown West’s Nick Lilley had other ideas in the 132-pound bracket, Saturday.
In the semifinals at Quakertown High, Lilley reversed a loss to Unionville’s Jake Taylor from a week ago and then took down Kennett’s Drew Massetti in the finals to earn Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
“I came out wrestling hard,” said Lilley, who took at third at leagues. “Last week I was upset with where I finished and I knew if I took care of business in the first round I’d get Taylor again. My goal is to get to states and to do that I knew I had to beat the best, and Jake Taylor was the No. 1 seed.”
Lilley rode out Taylor in ultimate rideout to win, 2-1. In the finals, Massetti scored the first takedown, but Lilley scored the next three for a 7-5 decision.
“In the finals, I was out-attacked in the first,” Lilley said. “I knew I had to get to my offense. I wasn’t going to lose so I just turned it on.”
Of the eight finals rematches, only one result was reversed. Unionville’s Mike Maguire (220 pounds) scored a late takedown against Coatesville’s Alex Raimondo to win, 6-4.
“Against Raimondo, that was personal,” said Maguire, who lost 5-3 last week. “I completely messed up my match last week and needed to redeem myself.”
The Ches-Mont had 24 of the 28 finalists and won all 14 weight classes, which was a first in the five years of the current districts set up. Of the 56 top-four finishers that qualified for the Southeast Regional tournament, 46 came from the Ches-Mont.
The Zapf brothers earned workmanlike victories over a pair from Quakertown. Cole Zapf (195) scored three near-fall points in the second and coasted to a 4-2 win over Noah Wood of the Panthers.
Doug Zapf (106) won the rubber match against Quakertown’s Josh Stahl, 5-1, after the two split bouts last season. Earlier in the day, Doug, a junior, won his 100th career bout in quarterfinals.
“It was exciting,” Doug said. “Seeing all the signs that said 100 in the crowd, that was cool.”
Also in inter-league finals action, Downingtown East’s Lukas Richie (113) outlasted Plymouth Whitemarsh’s Marco DiBattista, 7-4, and Coatesville’s Chase Stephens (152) recorded his 102nd career pin with a 50-second fall against Wissahickon’s Nick Senderling.
West Chester Henderson’s Jake Reid (120) majored Octorara’s Liam Babauta while West Chester Rustin’s Brett Kaliner (126) and Tyler Kaliner (138) engineered technical falls in the finals, as did Oxford’s David Cox (170).
A week ago, Coatesville’s Brent Windle won by injury default against Avon Grove’s Nick Barnhart. Saturday, Windle was strong on his feet, besting Barnhart, 10-3, to push his undefeated season record to 14-0.
“I was kinda nervous going into the match because last time (Barnhart) kept it close,” Windle said of their regular season match. “By the middle of the second period I knew I had it and was feeling really good about the match.”
Rustin’s Collin Hurley (160) won his second straight finals bout against West’s Gio Angelini, this time via second-period pin.
“I just kept pushing the pace,” Hurley said. “That’s how
I’ve wrestled the entire year. I try to push the cardio and I worked on my top riding during the week and I guess it worked.”
Avon Grove got a pair of champs from Kevin Edwards (182) and Josh Walls (285). Edwards topped Coatesville’s Sean McBride, 6-2, while Walls accepted a medical forfeit from Downingtown East’s Brendan McGinley.
Downingtown West won the team title with a tournament-high eight placers. Henderson’s Killian Delaney broke the school record of wins by a freshman with his 34th.
