Episcopal’s stifling defense leaves Notre Dame behind
Episcopal Academy rode a tremendous defensive effort in the first quarter and received a slew of solid individual performances in a 46-28 triumph over Academy of Notre Dame in Inter-Ac League action Friday.
The host Churchmen (6-4, 3-0) blanked the Irish in the opening period, 14-0, as Reilly Wright, Luca Mamula, Olivia Dirks, Katie Weaver and Elodie Furey shared the scoring responsibilities.
Wright paved the way with a game-high 15 points, and Mamula netted six of her nine points in the first stanza. Dirks also had nine points, while Furey totaled seven points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots.
“We played good defense (in the first quarter) and the offense was spread out,” Episcopal coach Chuck Simmonds said. “It was a good win. We were coming off a couple of tough losses.”
Jill Kane led Notre Dame (7-4) with nine points and Many McGurk added seven.
