Shipley point guard Sam Sessoms scores 1,000th point
Bryn Mawr – Shipley point guard Sam Sessoms became the first junior in school basketball history to eclipse the 1,000 career point mark. Sessoms joined the exclusive club Dec. 29 against Oxford when he pulled up from the top of the key and hit a three-pointer with 5:22 remaining in the third quarter to give him exactly 1,000 points. Shipley went on to post a 72-31 victory.
“It means a lot to me to score 1,000 points,” said Sessoms. “One of the goals I set for myself since my freshman year was to score 1,000 points. If you ask Coach Phil [D’Ambrosio], I talked about getting my name on the [school’s 1,000 point] banner and making a name for myself and that’s what I did. I am happy about that.”
Interestingly, Sessoms reached the milestone five days after his 17th birthday.
“It’s a pretty good gift to get around my birthday, especially since I don’t get doubled with gifts for Christmas and my birthday,” said Sessoms. “I like this gift.”
Last winter, as a sophomore point guard, Sessoms was a first team All-Friends’ Schools League selection, and displayed a wide range of skills, averaging 20 ppg, 6 rpg, 4 apg and 2 spg. His efforts helped the Gators win 17 games last winter.
Sessoms, who is considered a vocal leader for the Gators, said, “I am really appreciative [of my teammates], especially Kiyon Hardy. My freshman year, he was a sophomore and he has been playing beside me every game. Against Oxford he was trying to get me going early and wanted me to achieve that goal. I am especially thankful for my teammates who have been with me every step of the way.
“I have had a great time [at Shipley] – since my freshman year here, I have been welcomed with open arms. Coach Phil [D’Ambrosio] has been there for me on and off the court every day of the year. He is a huge part of my life and treats me like a son. I appreciate him and wouldn’t be here without him.”
