Owls eye playoff party
When we last checked in with the Bensalem High School football team, the Owls suffered a heartbreaking one-point loss to Truman that deprived them of the school’s first playoff berth.
With many of its skill players back for another season, now Bensalem is back and primed to quite possibly make up for last year’s disappointing end and join the postseason field in Class 3A.
“It was painful,” said Bensalem coach Ed Cubbage of the shootout loss to Truman that featured wild plays and one twist and turn after another. “There were so many things that went wrong in that game that could have turned it the other way.
“That game has been the focus of our offseason. This year’s senior class wants to be the one to get it done. Last year we came close. This year we want to kick the door down.”
Although Bensalem lost a good one in graduated 1,000-yard rushing fullback Malcolm Carey, it does go into the season with proven senior weapons.
These include quarterback Drasaun Moore, running backs Keith Parrish and Rob Harris, and wide receiver Isaiah Harris. They will produce if the blocking is there, which at this point appears to be the key to the entire season.
“Exactly,” said Cubbage when asked about the offensive line. “We have to rebuild there, but the good thing is it’s a very hard-working group. They spent a lot of time in the weight room. They have a great work ethic.”
Bensalem ended a string of losing seasons by going 5-5 last year, playing league champion Neshaminy tough and losing to Pennsbury in double overtime.
It was a year in which the program was turned around and this group certainly appears capable of making a run at a winning season and elusive playoff berth.
