Furey keys Episcopal’s comeback win over Abington
Elodie Furey stepped up when Episcopal Academy needed her most.
The Cornell-bound forward hit the go-ahead free throws with two minutes left in the fourth quarter Monday night at Abington High. It was the first and only lead of the night for Episcopal.
Furey notched a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead EA to a 51-47 triumph.
Luca Mamula banked the tying basket and played outstanding defense in the fourth quarter. Due in part to Mamula’s two steals, the Churchwomen (5-1) outscored Abington, 14-5, in the final stanza. Mamula finished with 11 points and Reilly Wright contributed eight.
In other nonleague action:
Sacred Heart 50, Phil-Mont Christian 30 >> The Lions (4-1) continue to impress in the first month of the season. Eileen Piombino fueled the win with 12 points, six assists and two steals. Kyra Quigley chipped in with eight points for Sacred Heart, which led by 13 at halftime.
St. Mary’s (Calif) 65, Cardinal O’Hara 55 >> All-Delco Mary Sheehan scored a team-high 18 points, but the Lions fell at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Ariz., against USAToday.com’s 16th-ranked program in the nation.
Hannah Nihill, the 2016 Daily Times Player of the Year, added 15 points in the losing effort.
