Penn Wood prevails as Fitzgerald dials long distance
Jay Fitzgerald had a career day Saturday.
Fitzgerald drained seven 3-pointers on the way to a career-best 24 points to lead Penn Wood to an 85-56 win over West Catholic at the Fred Pickett Classic at Chester High School.
Five of Fitzgerald’s triples and 18 of his 24 points came after halftime as the Patriots ran away with their opener. Kairi Jones added 14 points, Vincent Smalls added 13 points and Pernell Ghee chipped in 11.
Also at the Pickett Classic:
Chester 70, Simon Gratz 64 >> Jamar Sudan and Jordan Camper each produced career days for the Clippers.
Sudan scored a career-high 31 points (just his second ever 20-plus-point game) to go with 10 boards, and Camper set a career best with 17 points plus 10 boards and two blocks. Sudan hit three 3-pointers and went 12-for-13 from the line, including 8-for-8 in providing 10 of Chester’s 14 fourth-quarter points.
Brian Randolph III added eight points, four assists and five rebounds in his first varsity game.
At the McDowell Tip-Off Tournament:
Archbishop Carroll 77, Pittsburgh Central Catholic 37 >> A.J. Hoggard paired 10 points with five assists to earn tournament MVP honors, and Colin Daly (seven points) joined him on the all-tournament team.
The Patriots (2-0) spread the scoring with Justin Anderson scoring 11 points and Khari Williams chipping in 10.
At the Radnor Tip-Off:
Episcopal Academy 36, Radnor 34 >> Nick Alikakos scored 13 points and Matt Dade provided 11 as the Churchmen (4-1) held the hosts to four fourth-quarter points in a come-from-behind win in the final.
Mason Ressler led Radnor with 10 points, and Zahir Lee added seven for the Raiders (1-1).
At the Unionville Tip-Off:
Garnet Valley 83, Unionville 62 >> Austin Laughlin and Brendan Starr bested Unionville by themselves, scoring 32 points apiece and combining for 10 made triples as the Jags (2-0) won the title game. Cade Brennan added four points and 10 rebounds.
At the Delco Christian Tip-Off:
Delco Christian 65, Atlantic Christian 35 >> T.J. Tann scored 15 points, and Tyler Penley added 13 as the Knights (2-0) claimed their tournament title.
Jordan Parks added 11 points.
Christian Academy 49, Gloucester Christian 37 >> Nahom Kenna scored 19 points to lead the Crusaders (1-1) in the consolation game.
At the Don McBride Classic:
Roman Catholic 66, Haverford School 60 >> Christian Ray posted a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds, but the Cahillites hit 12 of 13 free throws down the stretch to ice the title game.
Kharon Randolph paired 13 points with five steals, and Jameer Nelson Jr. added 13 points for the Fords (3-1).
At the Media Shootout:
Strath Haven 38, Phoenixville 36 >> John Harrar tallied 11 points, and Jimai Springfield added six, but it was the perimeter defense of Springfield, Jeff Conner and A.J. Santisi down the stretch that limited the Phantoms to 16 second-half points in the Panthers (2-0) win.
Academy Park 44, Penncrest 42 >> Nick Simmons scored 11 points, and Shymere Stroud added 10 as the Knights (1-1) salvaged a win from the consolation game.
Tyler Norwood led all scorers with 16 points for Penncrest (0-2), while Mike Mallon added 11.
At the Oxford Tip-Off:
Bishop Shanahan 53, Chichester 48 >> DaQuan Granberry scored a game-high 23, and Epifanio Williams added 13, but the Eagles (1-1) were stopped in the title game.
At the Vanguard Tip-Off:
Avon Grove 59, Sun Valley 39 >> Dom Valente and Tyler Ungarino scored 11 points each, and Vinny DeAngelo added 10 as the Vanguards (1-1) dropped the title game.
At the Abington Tip-Off:
Girard College 44, Haverford 33 >> Trey Blair scored 10 points, and Dan Roe added seven points, but the Fords (0-2) dropped the consolation game.
In nonleague action:
Glen Mills 59, Ridley 54 >> Kenyon Cooper scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds, James Timmons posted a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds and Myron Sanders supplied four of his 13 points in overtime for the Bulls (2-0).
Liam Thompson scored 12 points and Migel Gamble added 10 for Ridley in its opener.
Springfield 65, Cardinal O’Hara 44 >> Kyle Sullivan scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half, including all four of his 3-pointers, and Alex DeAngelis poured in seven of his 11 points in a third quarter that the Cougars (1-0) owned by a 25-3 margin to claim the neighborhood win.
Jaye’lyn Peebles led O’Hara (0-1) with 13 points, and Taseer Jones and Tripp Pierce added nine apiece.
