O’Connell, defense lift Springfield past Great Valley

Maggie O’Connell scored a game-high 13 points and Springfield’s defense did the rest Friday night in a 36-23 decision over the host school at the Great Valley Tip-Off Tournament.

O’Connell banked a trio of 3-point field goals and pulled down six rebounds. Belle Mastropietro had four steals to go with seven points, while Jordan D’Ambrosio netted 11 points for the Cougars.

Springfield plays Upper Merion Saturday at 5 p.m.

At the William Tennent Tournament:

Penn Wood 53, Lower Merion 44 >> Carle Andrews exploded for 26 points, six rebounds and four assists to pace the Patriots. Briana Moore registered nine points and four assists, Kianna Elam grabbed 12 rebounds, and Khaliah Gordon finished with five blocks and seven steals.

The Patriots play William Tennent for the championship Saturday at 7 p.m.

At the Delco Christian Invitational:

Delco Christian 33, Gloucester Christian 9 >> Taylor Mingle poured in 22 points as the Knights cruised to an easy win on opening night.

Christian Academy 42, Atlantic Christian 27 >> Grace Gormley scored 13 points to power the Crusaders, who will meet host Delco Christian in the title game Saturday at 3:30.

Britney Dike chipped in 10 points and Danay Cooks-Green scored eight for TCA.

At the Abington High Tip-Off tourney:

Abington Friends 48, Notre Dame 47 >> After Mandy McGurk hit a bucket with 12 seconds left to put the Irish ahead by a point, Notre Dame was called for a foul with no lime left. That enabled Paige Mott to hit two free throws to win the game for Abington Friends.

Casey Walsh paced the Irish (0-1) with 17 points and McGurk finished with 12 points and five assists.

At the Haverford Tip-Off:

Merion Mercy 44, Haverford 28 >> The Fords had a difficult time finding their rhythm in the opener. Hope Coacher and Sarah Walsh were the team’s high scorers with five points each.

In nonleague action:

Marple Newtown 40, Avon Grove 23 >> Devon Adams scored a game-high 16 points and was two rebounds short of a double-double. Natalie Ayoub dropped in 12 points and hauled in six boards, while Olivia Young chipped in with five points and four assists.

Sacred Heart 40, Morrisville 27 >> Kyra Quigley’s 19-point, 11-rebound performance highlighted an impressive season-opening triumph for the Lions. Eileen Piombino contributed eight points and Kayleigh Doyle made three steals.

In Inter-Ac League play:

Episcopal Academy 56, Springside Chestnut Hill 30 >> Olivia Dirks netted a career-high 16 points, including eight in the first quarter, to lead the Churchwomen (2-0). Dirks made four 3-point field goals.

Seanna McNamara tossed in 11 points and Elodie Furey had five points and seven rebounds for EA.
