Gans, bigs pace Bonner & Prendergast to win in battle of Friars
Justin Gans scored 24 points as Bonner & Prendergast opened its season with a 79-75 victory at Malvern Prep Friday night.
Ajiri Johnson and Dylan Higgins each registered a double-double for the Friars, who led at halftime, 43-28. Johnson finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Higgins registered 18 points and 10 boards. Tymir Cooper (10 points) also scored in double figures for Bonner.
In other nonleague action:
Glen Mills 58, Pottsville 57 >> The Bulls connected on 13 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off the Crimson Tide.
Kenyon Cooper poured in 30 points to help offset 21 turnovers. Cooper was 12-for-14 from the line. Myron Sanders added nine points and 10 boards.
Sun Valley 62, Collegium Charter 55 >> The Vanguards took control in the second quarter when they went on a 25-15 run to take a 41-23 lead into halftime. Vinny DeAngelo paced all players with 19 points for Sun Valley and Marvin Freeman scored 13.
Bensalem 61, Marple Newtown 59 >> The Tigers came up a little short despite Mark Dever’s 21-point effort. After jumping out to a nine-point advantage after one quarter, the Tigers were outscored the rest of the way, 49-36.
Mike May scored 15 points in the loss.
Harry S. Truman 75, Interboro 39 >> Tarjah Faikai’s nine points and Albert Pewa’s eight provided little consolation for the Bucs.
At the Media Shootout:
Strath Haven 55, Academy Park 52 >> The host Panthers edged the Knights behind 6-8 forward John Harrar’s 19 points and 12 rebounds. Cooper Driscoll also notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards.
Nasiem Harley led the way for AP with 16 points.
Phoenixville 51, Penncrest 48 >> Ty Norwood scored 14 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter. His long 3-point attempt as time expired almost sent the game to overtime.
Justin Ross netted 12 points and Mike Mallon added six points and six rebounds.
Fittingly, Penncrest and Strath Haven play for the Media Shootout title Saturday.
At the Radnor Tip-Off:
Radnor 71, New Hope-Solebury 41 >> Tommy Webb paved the way for the Raiders with 20 points, Mason Ressler pumped in 13 points and Jack Thompson added 10.
Episcopal Academy 71, Palumbo Academy 54 >> Nick Alikakos fueled the Churchmen with 27 points and Conner Delaney tossed in 19. Kyle Virbitsky (12) and Matt Dade (10) also posted double figures in scoring.
At the McDowell Tip-Off:
Archbishop Carroll 77, St. Ignatius 73 >> The Patriots rallied from a four-point deficit in the fourth quarter as Justin Anderson’s 3-pointer put them in front for good.
Five players scored in double digits for the Pats. Colin Daley scored 15 and A.J. Hoggard had 13 points and five assists. Anderson and Jesse McPherson (10 rebounds) added 11 points apiece, while Mark Bradshaw collected 10 points.
Carroll plays McDowell High in the championship Saturday at 3 p.m.
At the Abington Tip-Off:
Abington 50, Haverford 35 >> Haverford’s Dan Rowe scored 11 a team-high 11 points. The Fords take on Girard College in the consolation game Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
At the Oxford Tip-Off:
Chichester 71, Oxford 68 >> DaQuan Granberry went off for 38 points and 15 rebounds, including a 16-for-18 night at the free-throw line for the Eagles, who move on to play Bishop Shanahan in Saturday’s final.
