Bowens, Lindsey-Terrell keep Penn Wood connected
YEADON >> Whenever Penn Wood quarterback Javon Lindsey-Terrell wants to work on his passing skills, he does not have to go far to find a receiver.
All the senior has to do is go next door.
Lindsey-Terrell’s neighbor on Bullock Street in Yeadon is receiver Raheim Bowens and the lifelong friends put on quite a show at Kerr Field Friday afternoon as the Patriots downed Overbrook, 34-18. Penn Wood has won its first two games of the season for the first time since 2010, when the Patriots went 9-2, won the Del Val League and qualified for the PIAA District 1 Class 4A playoffs.
Lindsey-Terrell was 13-for-21 for 187 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those scoring tosses were to Bowens, who caught five balls overall for 115 yards.
“We work out together all the time,” Bowens said.
“I know everything about him, how he’s going to run his routes, everything,” Lindsey-Terrell said
Bowens was an easy target to spot against the Panthers (0-1). He wore lime green gloves, socks and spikes that he bought off Eastbay.com, with the help of his mother.
“I didn’t know what color to get and my mother said, ‘Why not lime green?’” Bowens said. “She ordered it and that was that.”
Lindsey-Terrell liked the look, even though it did clash with the team’s red, white and blue uniforms. Head coach Nick Lincoln liked it, too.
“I control from the elbow and knees up,” Lincoln said. “They can have the hands and feet … You have to give the kids a little bit.”
Lindsey-Terrell and Bowens weren’t the only Patriots to have a big day. Running back Answered Gleplay ran for 144 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries. Defensive back Fatin Cooper picked off two passes and recovered a fumble.
Defensive lineman Kenny Ngaima was in the Overbrook backfield so often that you would have thought he was wearing the wrong uniform.
Yet it wasn’t a perfect victory. Penn Wood lost five fumbles and was penalized 15 times for 78 yards. Of those 15 penalties, 13 were either encroachment or false starts.
“We made mistakes, but we overcame them,” Lincoln said. “That’s something we’ve been trying to instill in our players and it was good to see.”
