Presenting 2016 All-Main Line boys tennis teams
The Main Line high school boys’ tennis scene last spring was led by Lower Merion (22-2), which captured its second consecutive PIAA Class AAA state title. Radnor (16-3) was unbeaten in the Central League and Haverford School (14-1) was undefeated in the InterAc. The Main Line tennis pool was deep and wide, as Conestoga (10-1), Episcopal Academy (10-3), Friends’ Central (11-6), Devon Prep (10-4), Harriton (8-7) and Shipley (6-5) also enjoyed winning seasons.
The All-Main Line high school boys’ tennis teams are selected by the coaches. The Main Line Media News sports staff limits the number of sports available to first team, second team and honorable mention – but follows the priority of the coaches’ selections.
What follows are the 2016 All-Main Line boys’ tennis teams:
FIRST TEAM
Nick Ruth, Conestoga – Senior first singles was first team All-Central League for singles, and finished fourth in the Central League singles tournemnt.
James Tang, Episcopal Academy – Sophomore held down first singles position on a strong Churchmen squad, and was on the All-InterAc team.
Drew Cooper, Friends’ Central – Sophomore first singles and co-captain won the Friends’ Schools League Singles Tournament championship.
John Walsh, Haverford School – Sophomore held down the No. 1 singles spot for the Inter-Ac champions, and was on the All-InterAc team.
Will McDevitt, Haverford School – Junior posted an 8-2 record at No. 2 singles for the InterAc champions and was on the All-InterAc team.
Matt Chen, Lower Merion – Junior first singles was first team All-Central League and a District One singles finalist, posting a dual match 16-2 record and winning the clinching match in the team state championship final.
Thibault Vernier, Lower Merion – Junior second singles was first team All-Central League, and posted a 16-1 dual match record for the eventual PIAA Class AAA state champions.
Sean Attebery, Lower Merion – Sophomore third singles posted an 18-0 dual match record, did not lose a set all season for the PIAA Class AAA state champions and was second team All-Central League singles.
James Harrington, Malvern Prep – Senior first singles and captain posted a 10-1 record, was regular season InterAc champion (5-0 at InterAc first singles), and finished third at InterAc singles tournament.
Will Frigerio, Radnor – Senior first singles was first team All-Central League singles, posting a 16-5 record at singles, and finishing third in the Central League singles tourney, first in the Central League doubles tourney and fourth in the PIAA state doubles tournament.
Josh Taylor, Radnor – Senior second singles posted a 17-4 record at singles, placed fifth at the Central League singles tourney, first in the Central League doubles tournament and fourth in the PIAA state doubles tourney.
SECOND TEAM
Conestoga – Max Howarth, senior first doubles; Alex Moon, senior first doubles; Cahlin Pragada, junior second singles; Carson Lortz, sophomore third singles.
Devon Prep – Connor DeFaber-Schumacher, senior first singles.
Episcopal Academy – Cole Kemmerer, sophomore third singles; Philip Tobar, junior first doubles; Callan O’Rourke, senior first doubles.
Friends’ Central – Charles Book, senior second/third singles; Harrison Burge, junior second/third singles.
Harriton – Isaac Goldenberg, junior first singles; Esteban Bermudez, senior second singles; Samarth Gowda, sophomore first/second doubles; Andrew Kofsky, sophomore first/second doubles.
Haverford School – Connor Lees, junior third singles; Drew Clark, senior first doubles.
Lower Merion – Lucas Kreuzer, senior first/second double; Will Rieke, senior first/second doubles.
Radnor – Brad Burton, senior third singles; Noah Offenkrantz, senior second doubles; Drew Harrington, senior second doubles.
Shipley – Kyle Wang, junior first singles.
HONORABLE MENTION
Conestoga – Kai Czubryt-Ogina, junior doubles; Sebastian Urrunaga, junior doubles.
Devon Prep – Dean Brekus, senior first doubles; Hayden Ludt, junior first doubles.
Friends’ Central – Ethan Broaddus, sophomore third singles/first doubles.
