Conley mows Bensalem baseball batters down for Yardley-Morrisville Legion (PODCAST)
LANGHORNE MANOR – Yardley-Morrisville starter Brian Bozena set ‘em up for the Riversharks Wednesday night at Cairn University and reliever Zach Conley mowed ‘em down.
The duo combined to limit visiting Lower Bucks American Legion League rival Bensalem to three runs on four hits, helping the Riversharks to a 4-3 triumph over the visitors.
Bozina held Bensalem to three runs during his time on the hill but he surrendered a leadoff triple to infielder Joe Benedetti to start the sixth inning.
Conley, a recent graduate of Pennsbury who is headed to Northampton C.C., allowed an RBI single to pinch-hitter Joe Pizzo, but he struck out five of the nine batters he faced in the last two innings including two in the final frame with the tying run at third base and the winning tally on first.
“There isn’t anyone else we’d want on the mound other than Zach,” said Y-M head coach Mike Decembrino. “We have some real good pitchers but Zach’s the guy we want on the mound in that situation and he got the job done.”
Offensively for the ‘sharks, leftfielder Billy Trimble came through with a pair of doubles, two RBI and a run scored to help his team win its fifth game in its last six outings.
“Billy has been hitting the ball well and he hits from both sides of the plate,” stated Decembrino. “I don’t know how many doubles he’s got but he’s got quite a few. I think he leads the team in RBIs. He’s 16 but he’s playing like he’s an 18-year-old.
“He’s coming up clutch when we need him.”
Conley also came through with the bat, hitting 2-for-2 with a walk.
Shortstop Ryan McCarty reached base in two of his three trips to the plate and scored the winning run. Rightfielder Blake Brown reached once in the first inning and scored a run.
No. 9 hitter Tyler Martin reached base with a single to left field and scored a run to give Yardley a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning.
