School record not good for DC to qualify
SHIPPENSBURG >> Delco Christian Ben Chung, Giho Park, Chris Chung and Amir Dorsey will not be running Saturday. They did not qualify for the boys Class AA final at the PIAA Track & Field Championships Friday.
The day, though, was not a total loss.
They may not be moving on, but they will return with a school record, which the foursome already owned. The Knights finished fourth in their heat with a time of 43.93 to break the mark of 44.35 they set last week at the District One championships.
“It’s actually the third time we broke it,” Chris Chung said. “We broke it earlier this year and then did it again last week. We set the standard for everyone else to follow.”
It was a busy day for Dorsey. He also finished 23rd in the discus (110-0).
“I just didn’t throw that well,” Dorsey said.
Temmate Elijah Johnson failed to meet the opening height in the high jump (5-10), which was disappointing.
“I’ve never failed to clear an opening height,” Johnson said. “I just couldn’t get it.”
As tough as it was to go home without recording a height, it still was a valuable learning experience for the freshman.
“It was a challenge,” Johnson said. “At districts, I was jumping against guys I knew, guys I’ve jumped against all season, but up here was different. I didn’t know any of these guys. I didn’t know what the competition was going to be like. It was all new to me.
“Now I know what to expect when I come back next year, not to sound presumptuous, but I do feel I will get back here, I know that everyone up here is very good. Everyone is a champion and you have to be prepared for that.”
