Lower Merion boys’ tennis team advances to district final
The Lower Merion boys’ tennis team advanced to the PIAA Class AAA District One team championship final with a 4-1 win against top seed Council Rock North Wednesday. The Aces (17-2) will face Wissahickon for the district title Thursday at Plymouth-Whitemarsh. The top four teams at Districts advance to the PIAA state tournament.
The fourth-seeded Aces won all their singles matches against Council Rock North. At first singles, Matt Chen defeated Alex Whalen 6-2, 6-0; at second singles, Thibault Vernier defeated Matt Whalen 6-1, 6-1; and at third singles, Sean Attebery defeated Jeff Zhao 6-1, 6-3. At first doubles, Council Rock’s Will Summerall and Garrett Strominger defeated Will Rieke and Lucas Kreuzer 6-1, 7-5; and at second doubles, Lower Merion’s Jared Robinson and Simon Sheintoch defeated Joey Gaul and Tom Nordham 7-6 (7), 6-2.
Tuesday, Lower Merion defeated Unionville, 4-0, in the district quarterfinals. At first singles, Matt Chen (LM) led Tristan Bradley 7-6 (7), 1-0 (match suspended); at second singles, Thibault Vernier defeated Hunter Whitesell 6-0, 6-0; at third singles, Sean Atteberey defeated Clay Horowitz 6-0, 6-0; at first doubles, Lucas Kreuzer and Will Rieke defeated Harris Avgoutsi and Mikey Muscato 6-2, 6-2; and at second doubles, Jared Robinson and Simon Sheintoch defeated Daniel Hopping and Zack Sokoloff 6-3, 6-1.
