Trio of teams hot on defending champ O’Hara’s heels at Delcos
A lot is at stake when the boys Delco Championships conclude Saturday afternoon at Interboro’s South Avenue Athletic Complex.
Can Cardinal O’Hara win its fourth straight county team title? Glen Mills, Upper Darby and Penn Wood will have a say in which team is crowned the county champion.
That question and many others will be determined when the county championship meet continues with the 4 x 800-meter relay and the field events at 4:30 p.m. The rest of the running events start at 5:30 p.m.
Proms, injuries and teams trying to qualify for the District One and District 12 championships in relay events will play a role in who competes in some of the individual events on the track. The weather, at least, is expected to cooperate, so the final day of the two-day event should be an interesting one. Here is a brief look at a few of the athletes and events to watch:
Rob Morro, Cardinal O’Hara >> The Villanova-bound senior will attempt to pull off the rare triple in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. He won the 3,200 Thursday and is seeded second in the 1,600 and fourth in the 800. He’ll be coming off O’Hara’s prom Friday night, so it should be interesting.
Keon Rantin, Glen Mills >> He’s the top seed in the 100, second in the 200 and a key member of the 4 x 100- and 4 x 400-meter relay teams that will challenge for titles.
Sekou Kanneh, Penn Wood >> The senior is the top seed in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.
Dennis Manyeah, Penn Wood >> He’s already won the high jump title, is a threat in the 800 and a key member of the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relay teams.
Gianni Lawrence, Upper Darby >> He’s the top seed in the 200 and a big part of the 4 x 100- and 4 x 400-meter relay teams.
Mike Chamberlain, Interboro >> He’s the top seed in the pole vault, No. 2 in the long jump and in the semifinals in the 100-meter dash.
Mike Levengood, Marple Newtown >> He ran personal bests in the 100, 200 and 400 trials Thursday. He’s going after the school records in the 200- and 400-meter dashes.
800 >> The top seven seeds, led by O’Hara’s Justin Jones, have run 1:59.70 or better, setting up what promises to be a fast final.
Shot put >> Glen Mills has three of the top five seeds in Quadir Gibson (first), Semaj Robinson (second) and Jeremiah Jefferson (fifth). Big points could be on offer for the Bulls in the event.
4 x 400 >> The last heat of the final track event of the meet could be interesting if all the teams put their best foursome on the track. Penn Wood (second, 3:17.66), Glen Mills (fourth, 3:20.13) and Upper Darby (sixth, 3:20.93) are all ranked in the top 10 in the state, according to pa.milesplit.com.
If you’re going, don’t forget to bring some canned goods to help out the Interboro track team in its fundraising effort for the Loaves & Fishes Pantry in Prospect Park. Anyone who makes a donation will receive a free bottle of water.
