Lower Merion’s Matt Chen advances to district singles final

Lower Merion’s Matt Chen advanced to the PIAA District 1 singles final by winning three matches in the district tournament last weekend at the Healthplex. Chen, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, received a bye in the first round, then in the second round defeated Isaac Rockower of Abington 6-1, 6-2. In the quarterfinals Chen defeated Alex Whalen of Council Rock North 6-1, 6-2. In the semifinals, a hard-fought match that lasted more than two hours, Chen defeated Andrew Tran of Wissahickon 2-6, 6-1, 7-5.

Chen will meet Michael Dickson of Downingtown East in the district championship match May 14 at the Healthplex. By finishing among the top four players at Districts, Chen also qualified for the PIAA state tournament.
