Owen J. Roberts’ bats come alive in 9-5 win over Boyertown
BOYERTOWN >> Wednesday’s loss brought plenty of frustration at the plate for Owen J. Roberts.
Friday … not so much.
The Wildcats pounded 15 hits and took control early en route to a 9-5 victory over Boyertown in a key midseason clash, moving them into a tie for fifth place in the PAC standings.
“We need a lot of momentum if we’re going to make the playoffs,” OJR’s Camryn Glenn said. “So this was a good start.”
The 15-hit effort was a quick rebound from the frustrations OJR’s hitters felt Wednesday, where PJP pitcher Ashley Remington limited the Wildcats to two hits in a 4-2 Golden Panther victory.
“Yesterday at practice we definitely focused on hitting a lot more,” OJR head coach Jen Beaver said. “We had two hits the other day in the loss to Pope John Paul and a lot of the girls were getting frustrated with the way they were swinging so we just wanted them to feel good. We hit a lot yesterday and that carried into today.”
Camryn Glenn led the way offensively, going 4-for-5 from the plate with three runs scored and two RBI. Brianna Smith finished with three RBI, including a two-run home run that opened up the scoring in the first inning.
“It was a fastball up and out,” Smith said. “Yesterday we worked a lot on hitting and I got pitched a lot of outside so I knew I would be able to take it if I got one today.”
Bridget Guinan added three hits with Darby Stuart and Casey Walker (three runs) each contributing two as the Wildcats built a 7-0 lead entering the bottom half of the fourth before hanging on as Lauren Waller and the Bears came alive in the middle innings. Waller finished 3-for-3 from the plate including a towering home run to left in the fourth, followed by a triple down the left-field line in the fifth.
Meghan Kovacs and Sarah Reinert (RBI) each finished with two hits in the loss for Boyertown. Allison Melahn pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief, allowing one hit and zero earned.
