Baldwin School softball squad edges Merion Mercy
Baldwin School came from behind to defeat Merion Mercy Academy, 7-6, April 25.
After getting an inning-ending double play in the top of the sixth, started by Noelle Zimmerman and Sam Martin, Baldwin got a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the win, including a double by Angela Smith. A passed ball scored Noelle Zimmerman to give the Polar Bears the lead for good. More runners rounded the bases on an RBI single by Sam Martin and a two-run triple by Zimmerman. Smith finished with three hits and three stolen bases in her first game back from injury. Rachel White played well in her second start in left field, making two big catches.
Zimmerman racked up two RBIs on two hits for Baldwin. She singled in the second inning and tripled to right in the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the first, Baldwin grabbed the early lead, 3-0. Angela Smith singled to ignite the Polar Bears’ offense. A stolen base then moved Smith from first to second. Sam O’Keefe doubled, scoring Smith and Zimmerman. More runs came home for Baldwin when O’Keefe scored on an error.
Four days earlier, Baldwin School pitcher Sam O’Keefe struck out 11 batters in a 2-1 loss to Episcopal Academy Thursday. Battling through a finger injury, she allowed no earned runs. Backup catcher Georgia Dahm played exceptional behind the dish, managing the game well with O’Keefe. Baldwin’s Julia Kait had two hits on the day. The Polar Bears’ lone run of the ballgame came in the seventh inning on a bases loaded walk.
