Main Line squads make their mark at 4th Manny Flick/Horvat Series
Several Main Line rowing squads had some fine performances in the 4th Manny Flick/Horvat Series, held April 10 on the Schuylkill River. Here are the results, as sent to us by the respective teams:
Agnes Irwin
Agnes Irwin raced seven boats in the 4th Manny Flick/Horvat Series, and kicked off the afternoon with a victory in the Gig/Novice 1x by Freshman Victoria Budike, who edged out the boat from Dwight-Englewood (Englewood, N.J.) by one-tenth of a second, and finished 20 seconds ahead of third-place Germantown Academy. Also finishing first in their heat was the Lightweight 2x (Gabby D’Arcangelo, Rosie Sokoll), with open water over Egg Harbor (Ventnor, N.J.) and Teaneck (Teaneck, N.J.)
Second place finishers were the Freshman 4x (Emma Bonner, Jean-Marie Dundovich, Perry Maner, Sydney McCarthy), JV 4x (Maya Brown-Hunt, Rose Lawrence, Lexi Short, Myka Thomas), and Varsity 1x (Anna Sophie Peters). The Novice 4x (Carson Heward, Anisah Thomas, Sarah Yoh, Cameron Zuccarini) and Varsity 2x (Alex Pinsk, Caroline Richardson) finished third in their heats.
Agnes Irwin head coach Molly Lawrence said, “Last week’s races were cancelled due to weather, so this was our first opportunity to test what we had worked on during spring break. The girls are starting to see the results of their efforts, and I’m excited to see how much faster they can get as we look ahead to next month’s regattas.”
Baldwin School
Baldwin School won the Girls Lightweight Quadruple Sculls. The crew consisting of bow, Jasmine Greytok, 2, Sally Chen, 3, Rachel Sutor, stroke, Zara Wenzinger, had an open water victory over Notre Dame and Germantown Friends School with a time of 6:12.30.
Baldwin junior Sally Chen said, “Our race was really good. Despite the cold, we put in all the effort we could and we really capitalized on our lead.”
The Junior Varsity Quad of bow, Julia Love, 2, Hailey Barnett, 3, Gabrielle Alston and stroke, Caroline Kiser, finished third with a time of 6:12.98 behind Conestoga (6:04.16) and Agnes Irwin (6:08.07).
The Lightweight Double of bow, Jane Bradley, stroke, Maya Bindra made some technical changes, and battled windy afternoon conditions for a fourth place finish and time of 7:17.70. The Junior Varsity Four of coxswain, Caroline Sterman, bow, Sanjana Dixit, 2, Tara McMahon, 3, Caroline Buchner, and stroke, Jane Bai finished sixth in their flight with a time of 7:06.20.
The Novice/Freshman Quad of bow, Da’Naira Dent, 2, Juliet Paiva, 3, Jessica Shen, stroke, Helen Ji raced for the first time together this season and finished fifth with a time of 7:00.76.
Baldwin junior and captain Jasmine Greytok had positive words to say about the underclassmen: “I’m happy that they finally got to experience racing and I hope that this helps shape their love of the sport.”
Baldwin head coach Liesel Hud said, “All our crews rowed well today. I am very proud of the effort the Baldwin team extended today; they raced well. The lightweight quad worked together to incorporate the technical changes we have been working on since our last race two weeks ago and it paid off. We look forward to the upcoming races and welcome the challenges of all the other schools competing.”
Conestoga
Conestoga’s first race of the day was also the regatta’s first event of the day – the boys novice single. Michael Medica (sophomore at Conestoga) got Conestoga off to a great start by finishing first – in front of Malvern and Roman Catholic. Conestoga freshmen Amir Zisling and Simon Bodek just missed medaling, coming in fourth behind the crew from Haddon Township.
The boys’ novice quad of Drew Tada (freshman at Conestoga), Alejandro Dyer (sophomore Conestoga) along with Conestoga freshmen Cole Fogarty and Harvey Sowerbutts finished first ahead of Ridgewood and Germantown Friends.
Conestoga’s freshman quad of Sam Nalbone, Shane Connell, Robert Molsbergen and Kale Wiley came in a strong third, only two seconds behind Malvern Prep. Sophomore Liam Bobber had to settle for fifth, in a very strong boys JV single event, with Bergen Catholic and Hatboro Horsham keeping him out of the medals.
Warren Zhao (sophomore at Conestoga) and Frank Wang (junior at Conestoga) rowed their boys JV double to a foruth place finish. Conestoga juniors Liam Roth, Matt Balch, Leo Draper and Julius Neubig raced their boys lightweight quad to a silver medal, finishing just four seconds behind Roman Catholic. Evan Cain and Zach Simpson (Conestoga sophomores) also took second place finishing just behind Malvern Prep.
Conestoga’s last boys’ race of the day was the Varsity quad. Max Amsterdam (junior at Conestoga), Jake Novak (senior at Conestoga), Griffin Hamilton (junior at Conestoga) and Jack Corr (senior at Conestoga) had an exciting second place finish, just 51/100ths of a second behind Malvern Prep.
Conestoga’s girls had a very successful afternoon of racing, winning each of their entered events. Blair Kennedy (freshman at Conestoga) and Kate Concannon (sophomore at Conestoga) kicked things off with a win in the girls Freshman/Novice double event.
The girls novice quad of Elena Lindquist, Abigail Lewis, Natalia Bertolotti (freshmen at Conestoga) and Danica Merrill (sophomore at Conestoga) finished first, over Sacred Heart and Montclair. Katherine Stanton (sophomore at Conestoga), Anna Green (junior at Conestoga), Leigh Burgess and Holly Culbert (sophomores at Conestoga) also finished first, beating Agnes Irwin and Baldwin in their race.
Conestoga seniors Carly Robins and Laura Phelan raced the newly christened Dr. Patrick Boyle to a first place finish in the girls Varsity double event. The team’s final race of the day was the girls Varsity quad. Laura Alcorn (junior at Conestoga), Caroline Gosnear, Emily Hompe (seniors at Conestoga) and Kate Hudson (junior at Conestoga) finished first with a 13-second lead over Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.
Episcopal Academy
The EA crew team earned four wins, and Episcopal Academy head coach Molly Konopka said, “Everyone [on our team] had a strong showing today.”
Winning teams for Episcopal Academy included Boys JV 4+ (Kyle Hogan, Peter LeRoux, Thomas Woodville, Timothy Baker, Schuyler Kresge at cox); Boys’ Varsity 4+ (Will Purtill, Nick Horbowy, Colson Andrews, Nico Christianson, Michael Larkin at cox); Girls’ Novice 8+ (Brooke Kraftson, Cat Spellman, Morgan Gantt, Elom Vedomy, Rachel Barber, Bing Quan, Mollie Bonner, Remy Peskin, Phoebe Barr at cox); and Girls’ Varsity 4x (Shannon Conlin, Laura Zecca, Morgan Lindblad, Josephine Konopka).
Radnor
Radnor Girls Crew Club’s six boats performed well at Manny Flick 4 April 10. The Freshman 4+ won their heat, and finished third overall. The Freshman 8+ came in third in their heat and fifth overall. The JV8+ won their heat and finished fourth overall; the Lightweight 4+ placed fourth in their heat and seventh overall. The JV4+ had a second place finish in its heat; ninth overall. And finally, the Varsity 8+ rowed to fifth in their heat, ninth overall.
The Radnor Boys Crew Club also had a good day at Manny Flick 4 with the Boys Novice 8+ finishing third in their flight and eighth out of 28 boats with a time of 5:22.38. The Boys JV 4+ finished 21st out of 26 with a time of 5:39.45 The Boys Lightweight 8+ boat continued to make waves, finishing first in their flight and second overall with a time of 4:40.51. Radnor fielded two Varsity 2 boats in the same flight and they finished second and third with times of 6:33.07 and 7:04.75 respectively. Finally, the Boys Varsity 4+ finished third in their heat and fourth overall (out of 24 boats) with a time of 5:19.61.
Sacred Heart
Sacred Heart’s young team made a strong showing at the 4th Manny Flick, placing second in all five of their events on a cold but sunny afternoon. Starting the afternoon’s racing were two very close races for both the Novice 2X of sophomore Bridget Bergan and freshman Dominique Marlin Andrews, followed by the Novice 4X with freshmen Annalise Dati, Angela Winter, Lucia Gargano, Sydney Young. The JV 2X was powered by sophomores Abby Ross and Joan Costello. Later in the afternoon, both the JV 4X with Amanda Tolvaisa, Bridget McCabe, Anna Carroll, Marcella Marino, and then the LTWT2X with senior Shannon Mulgrew and sophomore Claire Friedlander, raced to strong second place finishes.
