Carroll boys, O’Hara girls lead All-State picks
All season, the leaders of Archbishop Carroll’s boys basketball team and Cardinal O’Hara’s girls have grabbed accolades in tandem.
They added additional designations Saturday.
Both teams landed two players on the Associated Press’ All-State teams, one first- and one second-teamer apiece.
Archbishop Carroll’s Ryan Daly, the 2015-16 Daily Times Boys Basketball Player of the Year, was a first-team selection in Class AAA. His teammate, All-Delco Josh Sharkey, was voted to the second team.
For the girls, All-Delco Mary Sheehan was recognized on the girls Class AAAA first team. The Daily Times Player of the Year Hannah Nihill found herself on the second team.
Three other Delco players earned recognition. Academy Park’s Jawan Collins was selected to the third team in Class AAAA after the All-Delco led the Knights to the PIAA tournament for the first time in 17 years. Collins and second-teamer Xzavier Malone of Plymouth Whitemarsh are District One’s only representatives among the 20 AAAA honorees.
Episcopal Academy All-Delco Nick Alikakos landed on the second team in Class AA. On the girls side, Delco Christian’s Siani McNeil was also chosen, the All-Delco garnering a third-team spot.
Twenty players (six first-teamers, seven second- and third-teamers each) are selected by classification by Pennsylvania media members.
Daly, the Catholic League Player of the Year, was among 10 boys from the league selected. The Class AAAA first team included three from state champ Roman Catholic: Repeat Player of the Year Tony Carr, Nazeer Bostick and Lamar Stevens, a Haverford School All-Delco last season. Neumann-Goretti’s presence was marked on the Class AAA first team, led by POY Quade Green and Zane Martin, plus Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree on the second.
Southeastern PA also produced the Class AA POY, Friends’ Central wing De’Andre Hunter, while Westtown provided four AA honorees (first-teamers Mohamed Bamba and Brandon Randolph, third-teamers Jair Bolden and Cameron Reddish, the latter formerly of Haverford School). Sagaba Konate of Kennedy Catholic was the Class A POY.
The team that bested Cardinal O’Hara in the girls Class AAAA final, Cumberland Valley, yielded three all-state picks, including three-time POY Kelly Jekot and third-teamers Katie Jekot and Morgan Baughmann.
The Catholic League, which supplied state champions in AAA and AA, also provided the POYs in both. Archbishop Wood’s Bailey Greenberg was recognized in AAA (as was coach Mike McDonald), while Neumann-Goretti’s Alisha Kebbe took the honors in AA, one of three Saints voted on the team.
