Conestoga guard Darryl Caldwell is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week

The senior guard, a first team All-Central League boys’ basketball pick, joined the select list of the Pioneers’ 1,000 career point scorers earlier this season.

Q: What was your first reaction/emotion the night you scored your 1,000th career point?

A: I was really happy and excited.  I also felt relief when I finally did it.  My teammates worked hard to allow me to accomplish this goal.  They were so happy for me and that made it even more exciting for me.

Q: What does it mean to you to be one of the few Conestoga basketball players to score 1,000 points?

A: It means a lot to me and makes me feel accomplished.  I set the goal for myself and I worked very hard to score a career 1000 points.

Q: What (to you) has been the most memorable moment of your Conestoga basketball career? Can you share your memory of that moment and/or game with us?

A: I think my most memorable moment of my career is when we beat Lower Merionin the quarterfinals of Districts my sophomore year.  It was a huge game for us, there was a sold-out crowd [at the game] and it meant that we got to go to Temple [Liacouras Center] that year [for district semifinals].

Q: Is there a reason you wear No. 1 – does it carry any special significance to you?

A: To be honest when I made the varsity team my freshman year I had always played wearing No. 23.  Unfortunately, the bigger the number, the larger the uniform.  No. 23 was too big, so I had to go with a lower number.  So I chose No. 1.

Q: What do you feel is your strongest area of play? What part of your game are you working on most at the current time?

A: I think my strongest area of play is attacking the defense and putting my teammates in the right place. Right now I am really trying to work on my jump shot.

Q: Who are your favorite basketball players?

A: My favorite basketball player is Lebron James.

Q: Who have been your biggest basketball mentors, and what was the important thing each of them taught you?

A: My biggest basketball mentor is Bill Turley.  He is the person that actually taught me how to play.  He taught me strong fundamentals and how to play basketball the right way.  He taught me that there are people that are willing to go above and beyond for others.  He is a great man!

Q: What colleges are among your current favorites? What do you think you’d like to major in?

A: The colleges are West Chester, Kutztown, Widener, and Dominican College.  I am not 100 percent sure what I would like to major in, but I am interested in Sports Management and Criminal Justice.
