American Eagles

UPPER DUBLIN ->>Last week, when Norristown High’s wrestling team defeated Upper Moreland to clinch at least a tie for the Suburban One League American Conference championship, there was no celebration.
The Eagles wanted to win it outright.
And Wednesday night they got what they wanted, and they got it in style.
On the strength of eight pins, Norristown clobbered Upper Dublin, 61-15, to earn what it wanted most – a no-doubt-about-it, all-by-themselves league crown.
Oh yeah, the title-clinching lineup had exactly two seniors.
“This is the one we wanted,” said Eagles head coach Mark Harner. “Our young guys aren’t flashy, but they don’t make mistakes and put themselves on their backs.
“This might be my most satisfying championship.”
Norristown didn’t let the Cardinals breathe.
The Eagles ran off five straight falls to begin the match, including a shocker at 126 pounds when Rick Bregenzer outwrestled, then stuck Talib Davis late in the third period.
“I knew about his lateral drop, so I had to prevent that,” Bregenzer said. “The idea was to keep working hard and do what I could.”
“We’re a far different team than we were at the beginning of the season,” said Cardinals head coach Dave Jones. “We had seven guys out of the lineup, and we were just happy we had guys who got matches.”
Sitting on a 30-0 lead, the Eagles didn’t let up, as unheralded wrestlers like Zaire Tucker, Mason Hall, Lakine Wallace and Jason Little earned impressive victories.
“This is still a young team,” Harner said. “Now we have to get back to work and get ready for the (postseason) tournaments.”
