Devon Goodman scores 1,000th point in key Germantown Academy win
FORT WASHINGTON >> Germantown Academy’s 88-84 win Friday night over Malvern Prep was both a key game for this season and a special moment for a player who has been attending the school for nine years.
The Patriots (15-5, 4-1) kept pace with Episcopal atop the Inter-Ac with the victory and gave Malvern its second loss in league player.
The special moment came for senior point guard Devon Goodman, who will be attending the University of Pennsylvania in the fall. Goodman scored his 1,000th point in the third quarter on a beautiful reverse layup and foul that took his team from trailing by one to leading by two.
“It’s a great milestone to get,” Goodman, who scored 24 points in the win, said, “but I’m more happy that we got the win and that we are 4-1 and tied for first place in the Inter-Ac.”
“I’m just really proud of Devon,” GA coach Jim Fenerty said. “He came here as a third grader and everybody tells me I’m a good recruiter, if I knew a third grader would be that good I would take him. He’s just a wonderful kid, he’s a terrific student. I’m thrilled for him. He’s always wanted to go to Penn.”
Episcopal also had one loss in league play and handed GA its only loss last week.
“It was really big,” Goodman said of Friday night’s win. “After losing to Episcopal we knew we had to come out hard and get a W and now we still have a chance to win the Inter-Ac and that’s our main goal this year — to go for our four-peat.”
“That’s a really good win for us to get,” Fenerty added. “We kind of felt that losing to Episcopal the other day we can either take this as a positive or a negative. We had two really good days of practice.
“We’re halfway through the Inter-Ac . Every one of our games has been really tough.”
Kyle McCloskey led GA in scoring with 28 points against Malvern – 21 of which came in the first half.
The game appeared to be locked up when the Patriots had an 81-72 lead in the final minutes, but Malvern wouldn’t go away.
The Friars (11-8, 3-2) hit a few three-pointers – which they did all night – and trailed by two points, 86-84 with 10 seconds left in the game.
GA’s Cole Storm, who scored 10 points in the win, stepped to the line and sank two foul shots to give the Patriots a two-possession lead and seal the victory.
Malvern made 10 three-pointers in the first half and finished with 15. Will Powers led the Friars in scoring with 26 points, O’Shaan Allison and Mike Hollingsworth each had 14 and Quinn McCahon contributed 12.
“We knew they were going to try to get transition threes,” Goodman said. “Coach warned us, but we didn’t know until they actually did it. They had 10 threes in the first half and I think we did a better job in the second half of getting back on defense and containing those threes.”
