North Penn wrestles past CB East
TOWAMENCIN >> A dominant performance by the North Penn wrestling team Wednesday night began with Devon Weiss, battling until the final seconds to squeeze out a 5-4 victory over J.W. Scollins in the 120-pound match.
“Being the first guy, you always have to be the match maker,” Weiss said. “I went out there, wrestled as hard as I could.
“I knew I had to get that extra point,” he said with a smile, “so I wrestled hard and ended up getting it.”
For the Knights, the points would come in bunches from then on, as North Penn jumped out to a 29-0 lead and went on to a 36-21 victory over the rival Patriots in a Suburban One League Continental Conference matchup.
Weiss’ crucial escape locked up the 5-4 decision — he also had a takedown with just two seconds left in the second period, which proved to be pivotal.
“I knew I had to go right after him so he wouldn’t get the points,” Weiss said.
The Knights, who improved to 2-0 in the conference, would then get back-to-back pins from Khan Asif and Sofiane Bensmail at 126 and 132 in building a big lead early.
“I feel like we have some strong guys on our team,” Weiss said. “There are some places where we need to step it up a bit and make sure we can continue to have this undefeated streak. But overall, I think we’re doing very well. We have some very good wrestlers out there.”
East (0-2 conference) got to within 33-18, but Tyler Leidy came through in the 285-pound match for the Knights, giving a thumbs-up to the crowd as he secured a 6-1 victory.
Leidy finished up what Weiss had begun.
“He did a good job,” Knights coach Rob Shettsline said of the 120 pounder. “That’s what we needed, to start off that way.”
