Boyertown’s Wood, Campbell place second at Beast of the East

Jordan Wood and Jakob Campbell were consigned to runner-up finishes Sunday as part of the Boyertown wrestling team’s fifth-place showing in the Beast of the East tournament at the University of Delaware.

Campbell was second at 113, his bid for a gold medal thwarted by Delbarton’s Patrick Glory and a 5-2 loss. And Wood, the PIAA’s defending Class AAA 220-pound champion, saw a 35-match win streak halted by a narrow 6-5 loss to Holy Cross’ Matt Corenti in their gold-medal bout.

Wood had pinned his way through the division, his five falls featuring two in the first period – the fastest a 59-second drop of Hanover Park’s Patrick Julich in the second championship round. Corenti, by comparison pinned his first two opponents off a first-round bye before winning decisions with point margins of three and less to reach the title bout.

Campbell, a third-place medalist at 106 in last year’s PIAA Championships, had a technical fall and three major decisions in his early bouts. Glory had two tech-falls and two major decisions in the first four championship rounds.
Boyertown’s other medalists were Gregg Harvey at 182 and Tommy Killoran at 285. Harvey placed fourth after a 2-1 overtime loss to DePaul Catholic’s Brandon Kui, and Killoran was fifth when Sherendo’s Ben Avery had a medical forfeit.

Harvey was dropped into wrestlebacks by Kui, who posted a 4-2 decision on the Bear senior when they squared off in the third championship round. He finished the tourney with a 7-2 mark.

Killoran got to the 285 quarterfinal round before sustaining a 3-1 overtime loss to Mansur Abdul-Malik of St. Vincent Pallotti. He posted three pins in the course of his 5-2 run at the Beast.

As a team, Boyertown scored 140.5 points to be edged by fourth-place Nazareth Area (141). Blair Academy (N.J.) was the team champion with 240.5 points, followed by Bergen Catholic, N.J. (201.5) and Bethlehem Catholic (146.5).
