Ladies lead unbeaten Council Rock North to win over Pennsbury
YARDLEY – For the last two years, with Jackie Rogowicz and Vinay Ramesh playing for the Falcons, Pennsbury has dominated the scene in the Suburban One League National Conference.
Before that, Council Rock North was king of the SOL National hill and beyond, winning a couple of state championships including a team title in 2010 and a state runner-up trophy in 2012.
Now, Rogowicz and Ramesh are leading their college teams and the only Herr that’s left at the Rock is Madelein. The senior led the Indians with a low score 38 in an SOL National matchup with the Falcons Thursday afternoon, Sept. 17 at Yardley Country Club.
Herr had help from classmate Lauren Muhlbauer, who carded 39 under sunny skies and temps in the mid-80s and a light breeze in Lower Makefield.
“Lauren’s a great player and she’s been playing a lot of good golf lately,” said Herr. “She was chipping really well and making a lot of great up and downs to save par.
“It’s nice to see her come through for the team.”
“Those two girls are the anchors,” added CR North head coach Rich White. “Our team relies on them in every match they’ve come to play and they have not disappointed us yet.
“They are both contenders in every match.
“They’re as confident as anyone we put out there on the course.”
Loaded with 12th-graders this season, Rock’s senior class includes Logan Fuglestad, Rob Scott, Matt Palmieri and Dan Rose. Scott and Fuglestad contributed to the win over Pennsbury, scoring 40 and 41, respectively, to keep the Indians unbeaten at 7-0 on the season.
Junior Connor Welles also carded 41, helping North to a 199-208 triumph over the Falcons.
“We all expect big things from ourselves,” said Herr, who has a verbal agreement to play golf at Penn State. “We’re trying to work together as a team to really make this year count. We want to go out there and play all out not only for ourselves but also for the team.
“It’s a great opportunity for the underclassmen – the juniors – to get a chance to shine on the team, to pull together and rally.”
Fuglestad led the Rock to a big 194-227 win over Abington, carding 36 late last month at Huntington Valley CC. Herr and Muhlbauer also broke 40, scoring 38 and 39, respectively. Welles (40) and Rose (41) weren’t far behind in a total team effort for the Indians.
“That was as low as we have ever been on that course,” said White. “It’s unheard of to get below 200 down there. I don’t think we’ve done that in years.”
Fuglestad (36), Welles (39), Muhlbauer (40) Harrison (40) and Rose (41) led Rock in a 196-221 win over Neshaminy Sept. 16 at Middletown CC. On Sept. 3 at Jericho National in a 202-211 win over the Skins, Muhlbauer led Morth with a 38. Fuglestad was next with 39.
“It’s nice to see a different people lead our team each week,” said Herr. “It’s not just one person in every match.
“The whole team has been playing really well.”
The Indians’ most impressive win thus far is this one, says the coach.
“Yardley is hard to play for our kids,” said White. “We’ve never played well here but we played well enough to win today.”
“Yardley is a test to golf, there’s no question.
“You have to be careful; it’s narrow and there’s lots of trees. When you play Jericho, you don’t see a tree. When you come here, the fairways narrow considerably because of the big trees on both sides of the fairway.”
“You have to keep the ball in play; you can’t be left or right at all.”
The Indians must have hit right down the middle against Pennsbury.
For the Falcons, senior Alex Simon led his team with a low score 39. Next was 6-foot-4 junior Ryan Kim, who hit 40. Coming in to card 41 was classmate Justin Friedman. Freshman Pat Laushell (43) and sophomore Matt Babel (45) rounded out the scoring for the Falcons, now 6-5 overall, 5-3 in the SOL National Conference.
NOTES: Rock North has yet to play sister school CR South. The Indians face the Golden Hawks Friday, Sept. 25 at Spring Mill CC then play host to South Sept. 30 at Jericho National.
