Scarpato among the elite a third straight year
In addition to Daily Times Player of the Year Meghan Wimmer of Chichester, the rest of the All-Delco softball team includes:
Alex Viscusi, Episcopal Academy: The 2014 Daily Times Player of the Year, Viscusi was one of the most dominant and feared players in the state in her senior season. The two-time All-Delco posted a 19-4 record with a 0.86 ERA and 220 strikeouts. Bound for Princeton, Viscusi guided Episcopal Academy to earning a piece of the Inter-Ac League championship as well as a trip to the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association tournament final, where the Churchwomen suffered a 2-1 setback to Inter-Ac rival Penn Charter. Viscusi posted a ridiculous .600/.686/1.213 triple-slash line with 46 RBIs and 42 runs scored. She was tied for second in the county in home runs (eight) and was first in both doubles (14) and triples (seven).
Leigh Ann Jenkins, Ridley: The sophomore pitcher picked up right where she left off as a freshman, starting every day and leading the Green Raiders to the District One Class AAAA playoffs. Despite dealing with nagging injuries that plagued her most of the year, Jenkins notched 13 wins with a 3.12 ERA. She hit .330 at the dish with an on-base percentage near .400.
Courtney Scarpato, Springfield: The senior pitcher-shortstop earns All-Delco honors for the third consecutive season. One year after pitching the Cougars to Delco’s first PIAA championship in softball, Scarpato registered 10 wins with a 2.10 ERA and .201 batting average against, helping Springfield to a second consecutive Central League title and an appearance in the District One Class AAAA playoffs. As the team’s leadoff hitter, the Hofstra recruit batted .473/.561/.703 with 20 RBIs, 32 runs, four doubles, two triples and three home runs. She is a repeat All-Central League pick.
Reva Alderman, Garnet Valley: The junior was the top catcher in the Central League. Alderman batted .519 with a .600 on-base percentage and failed to commit an error all year from behind the plate. The All-Central League selection posted a 1.046 slugging percentage with six doubles, two triples and six home runs. She was the team leader in RBIs with 35 and struck out only two times in 54 at bats. Alderman is an early Lehigh softball commit.
Tori DePietro, Springfield: The junior shortstop-pitcher earned nine of her team’s 19 victories from the pitching circle, boasting a 0.67 ERA and a .200 batting average against. The sure-handed shortstop hit a cool .456/.593/.647 as the team’s three-hole hitter. The two-time All-Delco and All-Central League selection finished with 27 RBIs, 37 runs, nine doubles, two triples and four homers.
Kaela Kane, Cardinal O’Hara: The senior shortstop was the backbone of a Lions team that advanced to the Catholic League semifinal round for the second straight season. Kane was a table-setter at the top of the order, hitting .578 with a .731 on-base percentage. In addition, Kane was the team leader in extra-base hits and RBIs. She was among the county leaders in triples (five) and doubles (five). Kane also was named All-Catholic League.
Taylor Long, Episcopal Academy: The senior shortstop certainly left her mark at Episcopal Academy, blossoming into one of the county’s best all-around talents at premier position on the diamond. A Newtown Square resident, Long batted .489/.511/.682 with 31 RBIs and a team-leading 43 runs scored. She hit seven doubles, two homers and a pair of triples as she helped the Churchwomen earn at least a share of the Inter-Ac title for the second straight year. In limited opportunities, Long proved that she’s a very good pitcher, boasting a 5-0 record. She’ll continue to play softball at Franklin & Marshall.
Rylee Power, Marple Newtown: The senior shortstop capped an amazing athletic career with her second All-Delco selection in softball. Also a top-flight basketball player and tennis All-Delco, Power guided the Tigers to their second straight District One Class AAA tournament appearance. She batted above .500 with six doubles, four triples and six homers, including one each off All-Delco pitchers Courtney Scarpato and Leigh Ann Jenkins. Power will play both tennis and basketball at West Chester University.
Sam Tomasetti, Garnet Valley: Make it three straight spectacular seasons for the junior shortstop. While the Jaguars fell short of qualifying for the District One Class AAAA playoffs, Tomasetti was regarded as one of the top players in the PIAA. She was named all-state after batting a lusty .623 with a .671 on-base percentage. Tomasetti led all Delco players with nine home runs and finished with seven doubles. The Hofstra commit and repeat All-Central League honoree drove in 31 runs and struck out just three times in 61 at bats.
Taylor Winkelman, Springfield: Regarded as one of the top outfielders to come through Delco in years, Winkelman picked up right where she left off in 2014. The senior center fielder earned All-Delco and All-Central League honors for the second consecutive year. She hit an otherworldly .561/.662/1.000 with team highs in virtually every major offensive category, including runs (35), RBIs (27), home runs (four) and doubles (nine). She was selected to the PIAA all-state team in Class AAAA one year after receiving first-team honors in Class AAA. Winkelman will continue her career at Bloomsburg.
Sam Witmer, Upper Darby: The sophomore center fielder was Delco’s top breakout performer in 2015. As the best player on an exciting, young team at Upper Darby, Witmer showed the Central League that the Royals are on the rise after a pair of rebuilding seasons. Witmer, who has started mostly every game since her freshman year, batted .516 with a .596 on-base percentage. The All-Central League selection was among the county leaders in home runs (five) and paced all Upper Darby players with 23 runs.
