Kutztown defeats Fleetwood behind Grim’s bat and arm

Although it was a non-league game, anytime Fleetwood and Kutztown high school teams get together, good games are usually the result. On April 30, the Kutztown Area High School softball team traveled to Fleetwood in a game that would not effect the Berks League standings one bit. Despite that fact, both teams were there to win.

Thanks in part by the big game of Jenna Grim, the Kutztown Cougars came away with a 7-2 win. Grim was the winning pitcher for Kutztown, and did a lot with the bat to help her own cause. She had four hits in the game and drove in two runs. Teammate Courtney Stump also had a big game, going 3-for-4 with a double and a home run.

The win improved Kutztown’s overall record to 15-3 season. The Lady Cougars are 8-1 in the Berks League which still puts them a half a game behind Brandywine Heights (9-1) in the Division 3 standings, which one game left on the schedule. Kutztown took on Tulpehocken (a team that they defeated earlier in the season, 5-3) on Monday, May 4. Due to our press deadline, we are unable to report the results of the contest.

A win will mean the Lady Cougars will finished the league season at 9-1 and tied for first place with Brandywine Heights. But even more important, win over lose on Monday, the Cougars have clinced a spot in the Berks League playoffs. Tulpehocken is in third place in the division with a 5-4 record. Even with a win over Kutztown on Monday, the Lady Trojans can not catch the Cougars.

With the loss, Fleetwood fell to 7-11 overall this season. The Lady Tigers finished the Berks League season with a record of 4-6, which place them in fifth place in the six-team division. They were not able to qualify for the playoffs this season. The Tigers will have two non-league games remaining on their second. They travel to Oley Valley on May 6, and to Muhlenberg on May 28.
