Munger, CB West blitz Hempfield in PIAA Class AAAA opener
Holland — Nicole Munger drained a deep 3-pointer to end the third quarter and could only laugh while backpedaling.
It was that kind of night for Munger. It was that kind of night for CB West.
Spurred by the dynamite senior, the Bucks raced by Hempfield, 63-27 Friday night at Council Rock South in the first round of the PIAA Class AAAA Tournament.
The Bucks’ seemingly endless hedges, shows and pressures on defense just overwhelmed Hempfield. CB West threw an array of defensive looks at the Knights and just baffled their District 3 foe.
The Bucks also had Munger. That alone might have been enough.
The senior scored 25 points on a remarkably efficient 9-of-12 shooting and had four rebounds and five steals.
Munger was simply unstoppable offensively, scoring the first five points of the game. With 1:39 left in the first quarter, she backpedaled into the left corner, catching a Corrinne Godshall pass and drilling the 3-pointer to put West up 12-4.
That hoop, which marked a seventh straight West point, got the Bucks firmly rolling. In all, it was a 19-0 run spanning the 3:33 mark of the first quarter to the 4:38 mark of the second.
After Godshall hit Makenzie Mason on a sharp cut, Munger ripped off the next seven points, one bucket coming off a put-back. The senior also stood in and took a charge from Hempfield’s towering Alecia Rohrer, had three steals and pulled down four boards by half.
West was just in full-out hustle mode as a team. The Bucks were fighting for offensive boards, getting on the floor and saving balls from flying out of bounds.
Hempfield got a bucket with 4:27 left in the half but the Bucks scored the next four and took a 30-10 lead into the half.
CB West opened the second half with the same intensity. After Maggie Rakowsky was called for an offensive foul, Mackenzie Carroll just stole the ball back and went in for the bucket.
