Phil-Mont Christian gets revenge on Faith Christian, captures District 1-A title

UPPER DUBLIN — Back to back District 1-A championships feel pretty good, especially when they are the only two district titles your school has won. Saturday afternoon the Phil-Mont Lady Falcons experienced just that, as the beat Faith Christian 58-37 to claim the district crown.

“It’s pretty sweet,’ Phil-Mont head coach Bill Deheer said. “We faced a good team and we played really well, it’s probably one of our best games of the year.’

This was the fourth time these two teams had met this season. Phil-Mont was victorious in the first two, but in the Bicentennial Athletic League tournament semifinals, Faith Christian got its revenge and edged out a 38-36 overtime victory en route to being crowned tournament champs.

This game was a lot different for the Lady Falcons. In their BAL tournament matchup, they looked hesitant and unsure of themselves at points in the game and struggled to stop Faith Christian’s penetrating offense. In the district championship they we’re ready for everything Faith had to throw at them.

“We just told them to be a little bit more free and attack the basket.  (Katharine) Olinger did it great, (Kayla) Griffin did it great,’ Deheer said. “I said we can outscore a lot of people so the emphasis has to be on strong defense so play strong defense and don’t hesitate to attack on the offensive end.’

While the final score may seem a little lopsided, don’t let that fool you. This was a back-and-forth contest that got as close as two points late in the third quarter largely due to Faith’s resilience and refusal to go away.
