Area wrestlers punch tickets to South East Regionals
PROSPECT PARK — After the first day of competition, it looks like Council Rock South may not hold onto the District 1-AAA East title it captured last year when it outpaced the Rams by six points in the 2014 tournament.
Pennridge has a 176-116 lead over the Golden Hawks in the team standings and the Rams have eight wrestlers in the finals. With a snowstorm fast approaching, District 1 officials suspended the tournament in mid-stream Saturday, Feb. 21. The action resumes today at Interboro High School.
Of the 11 wrestlers defending champ CR South sent to districts, four have made the finals including Ben Radner (113 pounds), Zack Trampe (126), Dylan Schwartz (152) and Ben Kenis (195). Shane Flanagan (138), Luke Martoccio (145), Joe Doyle (170) and Thaison Nguyen (220) are still alive in the consolation bracket. In his final, Schwartz will face Neshaminy senior Dominic Stabilito, whom he majored in the Suburban One League (SOL) National Conference championship.
Aidan Burke (106), Josh Shalinsky (160) and Kyle Thorpe (220) reached the finals for CR North and the Indians have four wrestlers in consolations including Gianncarlo Flores (120), Jake Potter (126), Luke Ely (152) and Mike Rademacher (182). Shalinsky, who faces Pennsbury senior Luke Kowal in his final, is guaranteed a spot in regionals but Rademacher has to get past Neshaminy junior Noah Kisselback, who nipped him 4-3 at the SOL National Conference championships a week earlier. Shalinsky was clipped by Kowal, 4-2 in the SOL finals.
Neshaminy has two wrestlers in the finals and four in consolations with junior Bruce Graeber, the defending District 1 heavyweight champ, along with Stabilito making it to the championship round. Earning consolation semifinal bouts for the Skins were Mike Megahan (106), Justin Kramer (132), Ben Stern (170) and Kisselback (182).
Pennsbury seniors Eric Mongiello and Kowal are in the finals for the Falcons. Both finished with third-place medals in last year’s district tournament. Antonio Martoccio (106), Connor Joyce (120), who captured a district title belt last year at 113 pounds, Alex Holliday (195) and Mason Houriet (285) are still alive in consolation semifinals.
Only senior Dylan Nuttall has reached the finals for Truman though the Tigers have four grapplers still battling in consolations including Dennis Burns (113), Dustin Stone (145), Justin Litz (195) and Brandon Wiley (220).
UPDATE: Pennridge took the first two District 1 crowns with Rams lightweight Matt Parker nipping CR North sophomore Aidan Burke and junior 113-pounder Kordell Rush earning a 7-0 decision win over CR South freshman Ben Radner.
Area wrestlers took the next two divisions with Truman senior Dylan Nuttall (120 pounds) edging Pennridge freshman Micah Visuwan, 3-2, and CR South sophomore Zack Trampe posting a 16-5 major decision win over North Penn 126-pounder Sofiane Bensmail.
The Rocks took title belts at 152 and 160 pounds with South junior Dylan Schwartz earning a 5-2 decision win over Neshaminy senior Dominic Stabilito and North junior Josh Shalinsky posting a 3-1 decision win over Pennsbury senior Luke Kowal. A week earlier, the two had squared off in the Suburban One League (SOL) National Conference championships with Kowal earning a 4-2 decision win over Shalinsky.
In the heavyweight division, Neshaminy junior Bruce Graeber successfully defended his 2014 D-1 title belt when he earned a 2-1 decision win over Pennridge senior Joe Kracz. Graeber also defeated the Rams wrestler in last year’s district championship bout.
Falcons teammate Eric Mongiello (138) fell short in his quest for a district title belt when he dropped a 4-3 decision to Interboro junior Eric Thomas. CR North senior Kyle Thorpe also fell in the finals when he dropped a decision to Pennridge senior Ezra Outlaw, who won, 3-2.
Registering wins in third-place matchups were Pennsbury junior Connor Joyce (120), CR North freshman Jake Potter (126), Neshaminy senior Justin Kramer (132), Truman junior Dustin Stone (145), CR North junior Luke Ely (152), CR South sophomore Joe Doyle (170) and Neshaminy junior Noah Kisselback (182).
Falling to fourth place were Antonio Martoccio (Pennsbury, 106), Gianncarlo Flores (CR North, 120), Luke Martoccio (CR South, 145), Thaison Nguyen (CR South, 220) and Mason Houriet (Pennsbury, 285). Luke Martoccio lost a grudge match to Stone, whom he blanked 6-0 in the SOL National final.
Mike Rademacher (CR North, 182), Justin Litz (Truman, 195) and Brandon Wiley (Truman, 220) won fifth-place bouts in districts.
